This author has almost 76k followers on Instagram and talked about how she’d gotten messages from depressed fans. In one slide from her story she recommended them a five hour audio book - and said this (and I quote), “‘Aw but it’s five hours long I don’t have the time’. If you don’t have the time to heal yourself to have the life you dream to have then it’s YOUR choice to be miserable. […]”
Yikes. That’s kind of a messed up message to push.

That is remarkably out of touch and damaging. It’s like that bodybuilder who peddles depression being a choice for weaklings. It’s really toxic stuff, like you get active depressed people, or ‘functional depression’ I guess it’s the better term. They like to push through their depression and that’s helpful to them, though they’re few and far between, and when most people with conditions like depression try this it just makes it worse. They’ll get tired super quickly, their motivation completely drains and they find they can just never be in a good mood.
Which then gets them more crap from people around them because they’re not as happy as usual, these same people will then say going out and being active will help when it really doesn’t. This whole mindset is radically flawed from the outset and someone this popular peddling such nonsense ideas is truly disgusting

Why I am not surprised by the indifference and insensitivity that people show towards others?
I find it really disgusting how people tell others that they have depression indifferently as if they chose to live that way. Sometimes, people forget that we have no control over anything in life. So, she thinks that they have depression because they wanted to have?
Indeed, all we humans can do is make decisions about how to act in particular situations. However, sometimes it’s not easy to take an action, and the person cannot help it.
Overcoming depression is not easy at all. So, how sare she come and say that it’s their fault that they are miserable?
As human beings, we should help the other when he is in times of trouble. Not to suppress him.
(I am not coming to judge that author, but it was really nasty of her to say such a thing to people with depression insentivity. Like, think 1000 times before you throw such sentences to people. Such sentences definitely shouldn’t be thrown like this. At all).

wow. as someone who has sufferd from depression. the fackt alone she things an audeio book will do anything is crazy. it took me years of theropy to get better.

I guess I kinda see what the author was trying to say, but it completely negates the fact that people deal with their depression differently, so there’s no one size fits all for what works

At a certain angle, maybe yes. But, it also comes off as if she was saying that whoever has depression has it out of choice.
Not only that. But, it also negates the fact that people have depression not because they wanted to have it.
If she meant to say something else, she should have put it differently.

I’m gonna say this again…no one chooses to have mental illness and it’s not their fault.
You can choose to be whatever religion or dietary choice you want but you can’t choose mental illness.

I don’t think that’s what she means. I think she means if they don’t watch this podcast or whatever, then they’re not trying to help themselves. Not that it makes it too much better

That’s insanely rude and so untrue. Not having the time to listen to that audiobook doesn’t mean that you want to stay depressed. Especially since an audiobook won’t magically help somebody. It takes time to help yourself. It won’t happen in a span of five hours.
Also, how would she know the audiobook could help people? Everybody is different.

I think this is one of those times where someone’s words are being taken the wrong way.
What I believe she is getting at is that if something that is helpful to you, is put right in front of you, and yet you choose to walk away and not use it, then that is your choice, to choose the more negative side of the two.
Everyone deals with things differently and not everyone can actively help themselves in these kinds of ways. Some methods work more for others and some methods don’t work for people at all. Whilst no one should be judged for not trying something that isn’t for them, it is also not fair to judge someone for their outlook on that choice.
I doubt that the author meant it the way it has been taken, or meant any harm or offence with those words to anyone who has ever had or still has any kind of depression or issues in that sense. I think it’s just badly worded. She strikes me as more of a proactive type of person by this comment, who may not quite realise that it’s not something that will work for everyone.
People in this so called community, need to stop seeing the bad in everything that is posted. Don’t see harm just from words that might have been phrased wrong. If she didn’t care or didn’t understand that people need help in there, then she wouldn’t have posted the video at the same time.
She does however have a point in that if you find something that can help you, you have to choose to and want to use it. Not just brush it off. Not everyone has a method yet that works for them. So to brush off something due to lack of time… pretty weak argument. There’s such a thing as breaking it down. Take half an hour at a time or something, if it’s your thing.

I would agree, but I’m gonna be honest here the point is moot right from the off. A five hour audiobook? One, audiobooks on depression are all complete nonsense with nothing good in them, a lot of which are written by people like Jordan Peterson. ‘Clean up your room, and your depression will disappear’. Why thank you, you couldn’t have taken 400 less pages to say that?
But also 5 damn hours. I don’t have that kinda time and I’m not working yet, I’m sorry but that is a ridiculous amount of time for something that most likely won’t work. A lot of people with depression have jobs, and lives and hobbies. That they can’t just put on hold for five hours for some idiot to talk at them

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure those motivational books or audiobooks or podcasts work for some people. I know they work for a lot of my friends who self-diagnosed themselves with clinical depression (sigh), but it is kinda ridiculous to expect it to work for all the people out there with issues. If it were that simple, we’d have solved depression by now. Just prescribe a book instead of antidepressants!
But the thing that gets me the most is that the author is completely ignoring the fact that someone might not be ready for that. I mean, when I get really bad, I don’t have the energy to read my favourite books, let alone a book from an author who’s telling me I’m not trying to get better if I don’t read it.

Something actually helpful would not be an audiobook, and it certainly wouldn’t be five hours. It would be a lot more than five hours, spread out over months. It’s called therapy, and the reason therapy is necessary is because of how debilitating this can be for people. So this author making light of it - I don’t care if it’s accidental, with that kind of following you shouldn’t be making stupid blunders like that - is disgusting
