Any good alternatives to killing characters in stories?

• disappearing.
• discovering they have a debilitating illness that will eventually kill them.(there are a lot of things even modern medicine can’t cure/fix.)
• finding out that they’re parents are missing/dead.
• ( murder-mystery ) after they catch the killer and he’s in the police car driving away–the MC gets a text/sees a piece of paper “I’m still here” is written in blood.

Or do you think that killing at least a few characters in a story is important?

I think it’s important, I may sound insensitive but death is unavoidable. And when writing a murder mystery or story around criminal activities the chances of someone ending up dead are high.

Just like @Dying_Dreams, some of my characters are already dead to begin with.

I think death has its place in literature and when written well- it’s chills-inducing awesomeness… I was just throwing out some alternatives so Hanna1’s teacher can stop complaining. I am a murder/mystery lover so
