Put car ride with Fin on the top of Amelia’s “Never do again” list. Truthfully, this was the definition of the most awkward car ride she had ever been on. It all started with him telling her that she didn’t need to change. Was he an idiot? If she was being forced to go to this stupid party as his date, and would see the dean who would hopefully write her a good letter, she needed to at least look the part. Annnnd then he brought up how she wasn’t his father’s type. NO SHT SHERLOCK. “That’s not…I didn’t mean…Just… stop being a disgusting pig, that’s not what I mean.” Amie responded with a curt shake of her head. Her nostrils flared in slight annoyance as she crossed her arms over her chest, leaning against the door in an effort to stay as far away from Fin as possible. Seriously? She kissed him? Ew. Why in the world… even high… Amelia Grace could never imagine being attracted to the man sitting next to her.
Well… as anyone could guess, after he asked her where she lived… a place she hadn’t been in for months… the drive was…terrible. Neither of them spoke a word… after all… what the hell was there to say? They hadn’t talked in the 9 years they went to the same school… albeit they were in different grades until the current year. She didn’t know when he started hating her… but every time she was near him, he always had a frown on his face. As he played music… a little too loudly she may add… Amelia thought back to the first moment she had met the man beside her.
Flashback
Even as a 9 year old, Amelia was a little neurotic. “PHOEBE COME ON WE’RE GOING TO BE LATE.” Mama had just dropped the two off at the front of the school, waving them goodbye and little Amelia Grace was sprinting - her hand clasped around her sister’s as she pulled her with. Miss. Trebby would be sooo upset at them if they were late again
and Amie didn’t want yet another reason for her teacher not to like her. So of course, she ran… not really paying attention as she bumped shoulders with a 5th grader who was holding replica of the solar system - which… well… went down pretty quickly into a million pieces as it hit the floor. Amie stopped for just a moment, apologizing as she tried to pick up the pieces, or at least bring them together in a common spot as the boy looked almost shocked. Though grabbing a small one, she found herself crooking her neck as she looked up at the boy. “Pluto’s not a planet…” Amie didn’t get to finish that sentiment when Phoebe pulled her up and yelled “SHE"S SORRY, BYEEE” and they disappeared.
It wasn’t until a few days later that she learned that his name was Finley… as a teacher was yelling at him. And from thatt day on, Amie knew he was bad news adn that she should just avoid him… and it wasn’t like she was in his good graces either.
End of Flashback
It was his words that brought her out of the memory she had recalled within that moment. Looking up at him, she found an automatic roll of her eyes when he said five minutes. What would he do? Leave after forcing her to come with him? Yeah, right. Amelia exited the car when she heard him ask a truly lewd question. The frown on her features deepened as she looked at him as she felt an involuntary gag come out. Was he really hitting on her mom? Ew. “I don’t know, Fin, why don’t you come on in and ask her.” she stated with spite in her voice. Honestly, maybe if she wasn’t so annoyed with the whole situation…her mom included… her response would have been much different. However, at this moment, with those words she gave him a challenging bet you won’t look before walking inside the beachfront house with the key she hadn’t used in… a long time.
The house was fairly quiet likely meaning Phoebe was out which appreciated. The last thing she wanted was to see her sister… or even her mother honestly. Though apparently not every wish came true. Amelia had only gotten about a few steps in when she saw her mother exit the kitchen with Lexie in her arms. Locking eyes with the women, Amelia felt a tinge of guilt about what had happened before she reminded herself what her mother had done, and then, any guilt that remained in her eyes disappeared. Looking form her mom’s eyes, Amie looked down to Lexie and a soft smile met her features as she walked up to her mom, though only gave attention to Lexie. “Hi Lex, you’re growing up soooo fast,” Amie smiled, pinching her sister’s cheeks before placing a kiss on her forehead. She heard her mom start to say something, though thankfully, before she could get anything out, the idiot - Finley Klein - walked inside. With a roll of her eyes, Amie looked at her mom one last time before walking away and upstairs to her room to get changed - leaving Fin and her mom alone downstairs.
Did she think Fin’s flirting skills (which. let’s be honest, he has none) were going to get him anywhere with that woman? Probably not, but who knows. In that moment, it honestly didn’t matter as Amie walked upstairs into her room and looked through her dresses to pull out one with long sleeves. It only took her a few moments to change into the dress, and then about 6 minutes to put on a tinge of makeup to make herself presentable.
With that, she found herself walking back downstairs, to a Fin who was clearly entertaining her mother. “Are you ready to go or would you rather take my mom on a date to this party… you know what… don’t answer that. Let’s just… get going.” Amie sighed, walking to the door as she waited for Fin to follow her. Would her mom say anything on the way out… let’s hope not. This was a conversation Amie had been avoiding.
