For Xavier, the two weeks leading up to the prom had been rough, to say the least. He’d barely slept, which, as awful as it sounded, was something he had gotten used to over the past seven years, ever since the night of March 10th, 2033, when he had been woken up by the sound of a blaring fire alarm and the smell of smoke.
“…spacing out again.”
“What?” He responded, remembering that he was on the phone with his cousin as he caught the end of their sentence. They were both being picked up by their own dates, so they decided to get ready at their own houses instead of together. “You just proved my point. I said you’re spacing out again.” They repeated as he got started on his makeup, attempting to hide the sleepless nights underneath blush and shimmery eyeshadow. “I’m well aware of that Athens, thank you.” He quipped and he swore that he could hear them rolling their eyes through the phone. “Please tell me you were in the middle of doing your eyeliner or something.” Their voice had a tinge of excitement that made Xavier shake his head. “Sorry to disappoint you, but no, I do not have makeup smeared across my face.” He heard someone else’s voice come through Athena’s phone and a few moments later they told him they’d see him at the prom and then hung up.
He finished his makeup and migrated to his closet to finish getting ready, putting on the tuxedo that he and his parents had bought for the occasion, concealing his cross and his tattoo underneath his dress shirt. He tied his bow tie, not without watching several how-to videos on the internet, and then slid on his jacket before walking back into his bathroom to quickly style his hair before heading downstairs to where his parents were waiting for him. His mom barely waited for him to get off the stairs before she came up to him, putting her hands on his shoulders as she looked up at his face.
“You look so handsome, Xavier.” She told him, making him roll his eyes in embarrassment. “When is Reuben coming?” His dama asked, at the same time that the doorbell rang. “Right now.” He answered as he opened the door, finding Reuben on the other side. He was wearing a suit that consisted of a blue jacket and orange pants. It was very colourful but at the same time, very Reuben and honestly, Xavier wouldn’t have expected anything less. “Reuben, you look amazing.” He told him, skipping over typical greetings and getting right to what he wanted to say.
