Justin chuckled softly at Veronica’s candid remarks, her honesty a breath of fresh air amidst the somber atmosphere. “Yeah, I would say ‘good timing’ has been pretty absent the last few weeks,” He replied. Though there would never have been a ‘good time’ for any of this to happen. But to acknowledge that didn’t make any of this easier. “But yeah, I’m sure she’d rather we find ways to lighten up, even for a bit,” He continued, “I’m not sure if pretending to be prom dates is exactly what she meant though,” He added with a touch of humor - “But whatever does the job, really.”
“I’m confused, what part of the sadness and black clothing doesn’t make funerals a hit for you?” Justin inquired, raising his brows. Perhaps it wasn’t the best time for Justin to be making jokes, but bringing light in situations has been all he’s ever known to do. He was so used to trying to bring others up, it became instinctual. “Maybe funeral hosting isn’t my strong suit,” He continued to joke, though then gave a glance that told Veronica he hoped that was true, that this would be the kind of experience would remain an anomaly.
The conversation took a shift when Veronica addressed the elephant in the depressing room. “Ah, you remembered the ‘Sadie’s son’ part,” Justin replied. He stopped for a moment to think about how he actually was, letting the gravity of the situation sneak up on him. But, he had to stop himself - if he thought for too long he would be joining the rest of the room lacking the same composure. “I’m actually thinking I’ve inherited her acting trait. How is this: ‘I’m fine, really,’?”
