Halloween was definitely one of her favourite holidays (Valentine’s was also a top contender), one that she often prepared for months in advance simply because of the general excitement she felt for that time of year. Yep, she was one of those people who would talk about Halloween as early as March, even with it being months away. The holiday’s been made that much more special ever since she got into fashion design, with Dai designing her own costumes each year. This year’s costume resembled the getup of the flappers from the 20s, silvery and shiny and one that she had particularly quite enjoyed making. And, of course, Reuben wore the coordinating costume by wearing the male equivalent from the 20s. She was, frankly, surprised he didn’t insist on the two of them being clowns, but it appeared that maybe the whole clown sitch was a one-and-done sorta thing.
The text message containing the names of her group members was met by her with a slight downturn of her lips; in this all-girls group, none of them were people that she was on particularly good terms with. Danielle, she just didn’t really get along with while Destiny and Embry were both exes of hers. At least with Destiny, they’d dated a while back and she’d long moved on, but with Embry… the wound was much fresher. Though she knew she was the one who’d borne the knife, and the blood of their relationship was on her hands.
She hadn’t talked to Embry since their breakup, and she wasn’t sure if this whole group thing would allow their silence to persist or if they’d trade awkward, stilted for the duration of this evening; she also wasn’t sure which would be worse. Either way, Daiane was sure that this night would be something… were they allowed to do any last-minute switches? Maybe she could, like, avoid all of this and go join someone else’s group—preferably one with Reuben, whom she’d been texting anxiously since she separated from him to find the group members.
“Hey, Daiane.” Her motions stilled at the familiar voice. This place is pretty cool, right?” Totally unprompted, Embry had approached her, after, like, weeks of nothing. And it was friendly—which she could go with, it was just unexpected. “Embry, hi!” she replied, her voice maybe a tad too excited, a warm smile lifting her lips. In spite of everything, Embry was still someone who could make her smile. “Yeah, it is pretty cool, really cool, actually. I think I love this place. Like, have you seen the decor? Awesome. Not sure how much of it is real and how much has been set up for this whole event, but this has to be the best place to host an overnight stay for Halloween. Totally getting spooky vibes. Which, is a bitttt concerning ‘cause of the whole ‘spending the night in an abandoned haunted house’ thing. Isn’t that the start of every horror story ever?” A peal of nervous laughter fell from her lips, though the nerves were more at cause of this girl’s presence in front of her rather than any supernatural threat the mansion posed. “I wouldn’t really be surprised if we were greeted by ghosts in the middle of the night, it almost feels like that’s inevitable. Like sort of how could you not expect that, you know? I feel like if there was a place where ghosts breed, it would be here. Fancy enough to be a suitable haunting place but also still have that clear ghost energy. Kinda seems perfect for them but maybe I’m…” She trailed off, blinking as she realized she had opened her mouth and had not closed it since. It’s true that she rambles quite often on a lesser degree, but this trait combined with her present nervousness was a recipe for word vomit. “…oh wow, sorry I’m gonna shut up now. I’m just. Yeah, sorry, limiting the rambles. Rambling not. Ramblingn’t, some might say—wait sorry okay yes.” Daiane brought her hands up in a thumbs up gesture, awkward smile accompanying the awkward gesture. Just a boatload of awkwardness, wasn’t she?
“But hey I love your costume! You look—” she (not-so) subtly cleared her throat “—I mean it looks really good. It’s from Sailor Moon, right?” Embry’s braids especially, they were gorgeous—she looked gorgeous. Which. Of course. Like no duh. “So, how’ve you been?” Daiane asked, arms folding against her chest. “Has everything been good? How’s- how’s Demi?”
