{ late to the ball / with Augustus }

⎯⎯ ୨୧ ⎯⎯

Every girls dream. The most magical moment any young lady could experience, and would experience, besides marriage. Standing so proud in your most magnificent attire in front of the queen. Getting courted and spoiled by many different men, one of which will become your husband. How wonderful does that sound? Of course those weren’t the thoughts of Margaret, but words of her sister, Barbara, who tried so hard to help her little sister believe how this is something she wanted and needed. But it’s not, and it never will be. In Margaret’s mind giving your life away to someone you don’t know, someone who desperately tries to win you over for one reason or another is the least human thing a person could do. Giving away your life and your interests, time was not something Margaret ever planned to do.

”Are you mad?“ Margo’s words echoed through the foyer of the Hastingston’s home, not a rare occurrence considering the fact she doesn’t let things get to her and most of the time, to be fair, doesn’t even pay attention to the people trying to communicate with her. But when there’s a baby goat in front of you you just have to notice it. ”Is this your way of - Father! Just because there’s a goat in front of me I-“ her words and expression softened, looking at the small, cute face of the animal she could only guess was hers now. Now of course Margaret accepted the animal, naming it Pebles, but it would be far from truth to say this is how her family got her to consider being one of the debutantes this year. How she found herself now sitting in a carriage with her brother Archibald after 5 months of being pressured to do it was far simpler- she just decided she would do it. Her true intentions and reasonings might not be that important right now.

”Let me see a smile on your face. Before you know it, dear, you will be back in comfort of your chambers. Thanks to-“ ”I can’t believe him.“ Margo cut of her brother, Archie, who has been sitting across from her, joining her at the ball. You see… Today was supposed to be the day Barbara always so cheerfully described would be the most magical day for Margo. The day she was supposed to stand in front of the queen, and be judged by the same because that’s what everyone wishes to be doing. Everyone would love to see the look on her face, almost immediately knowing if they are pretty or good enough to get married this year. How lovely does that sound? But universe had other plans for Margaret today, plans to which she was partially grateful for. Because of some family matters she got to skip all of those magical moments, dances and just show up, in a way announcing she too was here because she was looking for a husband. Now here is where things might get a little confusing- yes, Margaret would love to be at home right now, having a front seat to the mess that was happening while she is here, avoiding getting asked for a dance by men she would be trying her hardest to avoid for the next few weeks but at the same time she loves the fact she was going. How could she possibly miss out on all the drama that’s bound to happen there? Miss out on all the failed attempts of men to woo the ladies?

”We are not going to discuss that here. Or anywhere for that matter,“ the sternest in Archie’s voice drew Margaret out of her own thoughts, a sigh escaping her lips as she leaned back, her eyes closing. ”If anyone dares to ask we had a funeral to attend.“ Yes, yes, Margo knew all of that but can a girl complain for a little bit? ”I apologize, brother dear, but enlighten me please - what else am I supposed to think about right now? All those…” The look on her face showed anything but amusement. ”Hands that never worked a day in their life touching mine for a dance- Oh, wait, no… Because of “funeral” that is not going to happen, I am so, incredibly happy-“ ”Margaret-“ ”Fine. I will gladly take the way you said my name as a sign I can just,“ quickly improvising a move or two from Archies lessons, Margo continued, ”Whoever comes near me and it does not please me.“ For a moment Archie smiled at Margo’s words, approving of her not so silly ideas before his attention shifted to the palace they were approaching, making Margo look the same way.

”My lord,“ Margo’s smile and whole face lit up at the sight of Augustus approaching her and striking a conversation, completely diverting her mind from the thoughts she got lost in, hoping the night would go by without anyone noticing her but this might be the only company Margaret did not mind. ”I must admit the night so far is not as scary as I thought it would be.“ If she did not want her parents knowing she had no intention of marrying she had to keep things as light as she could, taking every chance to pretend she is delighted to be here even if she did not like lying to a friend she deeply cared about. And there were so many reasons why she cared deeply for Augustus, why she found him to be one of her dearest friends. One thing was forcing your younger brother and cousins, nephews and nieces to do things you enjoy but it was a completely different experience doing it with someone who knew how to enjoy those same things. Who made you feel like your interest and hobbies made you an even more interesting person. Just like Margaret he shared the love for some of the same things and more than often you could catch her spending time at his estate bringing his animals to love her more and teaching him how to make some of the most beautiful flower crowns she could only hope he keeps somewhere.

”Oh I could only imagine how you feel. As much as they suit you and may I agree do look polished to perfection there truly is nothing that could ever come close to the feeling of being barefoot.” Margaret laughed lightly, taking a moment to look around the ballroom and let her imagination do the thing it always does - in this situation imagine everyone barefoot. It was never hard for her to keep a smile on her face when she was around Augustus, so it was only natural for that smile to stay on her lips as she brought her gaze back to him. ”If we were at a different place, different time I hope you would follow my lead and just take your shoes off? It sure is such a pity that wouldn’t be accepted here.“ She got quiet as she said those words trying to act proper but still let her true feelings out. ”And if you allow me to assume - there would not really be time for that considering stunning ladies here kept you on your feet all this time?“
