Pre-dance four Belle Fleur

Baylor listened attentively to Belle’s recounting of her tenth birthday party and how she first met Lady Maisie. His gaze remained focused on her, absorbing the details and nuances of her story. “I see. I was not aware of such a banquet.” His analytical and logical nature was busy contemplated why he had not been aware of it, “It’s quite possible that I wasn’t aware of that meeting as I happened to be in Scotland during that period. Travel and different obligations can lead to such oversights.” as he spoke about Scotland, the accent he had picked up over the years came out much stronger than ever. “It appears quite fitting you have made my sister’s acquaintance, for as far as I am aware, my sister too holds a great fondness for such gatherings.”

What he did however not say, is that he preferred his sister to not spend much time with someone as independent as Belle. It would be a disaster for their family if Maisie would no longer wish to marry, and he could not help but believe Belle would be a negative impact on his sister and her values and norms. He believed that was something he needed to discuss with Maisie, not Belle. Baylor’s concern for his sister’s future and the family’s standing weighed heavily on his mind however.

When Belle confessed her family’s love for having an upper hand in society, Baylor’s expression remained composed, but he couldn’t help but offer a subtle nod of understanding. He respected her honesty in acknowledging the political nature of her family’s actions, “That is certainly to be respected.”

Suddenly, Belle did not seem like a terrible option for marriage, surely Baylor would not get involved in someone who wished to not marry, for he needed to secure a marriage this season. But she would most certainly be a respectable choice and marrying a Fleur daughter would open up doors for him that were currently closed. The marriage game was to some degree a strategic one for him, and that is why he could appreciate the Fleur family. So she was something he would certainly be keeping in the back of his mind during this season.

As Belle agreed with his assessment of Italy and Portugal and expressed her opinion on Portugal being a great investment for her sister’s debut, Baylor appreciated her insight. When she inquired about his extensive knowledge on the subject, Baylor acknowledged Belle’s observations with a faint but respectful smile. “I am afraid neither being a traveler nor a researcher fully applies to my situation. As I’ve had the privilege of gaining insights into the political and diplomatic landscapes of various nations through my responsibilities as an Earl,” he explained. “While I may not have personally visited many foreign countries, my position has allowed me to delve into the political intricacies and cultivate a deep understanding of their situations. It’s a duty I take seriously, for it is of importance in making more informed judgments and decisions in the House of Lords.”

“Of course, Mademoiselle Fleur. There’s no need to share more than you wish. We can direct our conversation toward subjects that you find more enjoyable or intriguing.” He gave a small nod, respecting her boundaries and emphasizing their shared goal of a pleasant and comfortable conversation. “Marriage is often perceived as a social obligation and an integral part of the societal fabric,” he began. “It’s a means of forming alliances, preserving family legacies, and securing the continuity of one’s lineage. In many cases, it is a duty that is not taken lightly. While I do understand and appreciate its significance, my own inclination toward it is primarily driven by a sense of responsibility as I now have became Earl and head of the house, responsibility both to my family name, its legacy, and my societal position. Personal desires are sometimes secondary in such matters. While deep within I might desire love, such matters simply might not be achievable for someone like me in marriage.” he said feeling a touch of sadness, his eyes briefly reflecting a deeper emotional struggle, “though I do respect those who approach marriage with different perspectives”

As he spoke he thought back to the conversation he had with Adeline, where he had felt something that could develop into love. Deep love for that matter. It still scared him, even if he badly wanted to give in to the emotions, put all his eggs in the basket of the one lady he found himself attracted to mentally and physically. He had those strong urges and desires to. He just was not sure if he could…
