Truly, Lydia’s intervening to the orchestra had been an act of retaliation. Interrupting her conversation with Atlas to take her to yet another meaningless suitor had left her exasperated. Despite that bitterness remaining, Lydia met Archie’s gaze with a charming smile. “Ah it seems we have no use for introductions — a Lord who knows his ladies, how fortunate we are tonight,” She responded with a playful tone, to not only break past the awkward formalities that usually came at the start of conversation, but to prevent her current frustrations to be taken out on a stranger. “Dare I assume this isn’t your first season?” She inquired. Lydia wasn’t awfully acquainted with the Hastingston family; for her efforts with the youngest, Margaret, had always fallen short for whatever reason - despite their similarities. Though she wouldn’t let it deter her from trying with the now-acquainted brother.
“Believe me, it is my pleasure,” She told him in a reassuring manner. “I cannot fathom how anyone can put up with beautifully played- yet strikingly similar sounding- scores through the entirety of the night,” Lydia continued; though failing to mention that the music was only a small fraction of what may drive people to madness in this setting. However Lydia’s attention was caught by a previous statement. “You believe this is the liveliest?” She challenged, raising her eyebrows. “The night is still young, my Lord.”
Considering her assumption that this wasn’t Archibald’s first season, it took Lydia by surprise that he required her initiation to begin the dance. Nevertheless, Lydia contrasted his hesitation with assertion. While her intentions had been to lead him to the dance floor, her attention was taken by waitstaff with more drinks. Truthfully Lydia needed this more than he did, but she wouldn’t let that be told to him. “My trick to navigating these events with grace,” She offered, before taking two from the tray and extending an arm towards him.
