Lydia couldn’t help noticing the use of ‘if’ in Belle’s sentence, and notice the emphasis Belle had put on it to catch her attention, portraying a hint of doubt at a push off the horse being the reasoning. Of course Lydia was aware that the chance her thoughts were correct was small, but acknowledging the endless possibilities made her nervous. Because if there were so many explanations it could take them forever to figure it out, and Lydia didn’t want to believe it would take that long. She had to narrow it down, and so she had to ignore Belle’s subtle speculations that this was not the correct path to be looking into.
Instead, Lydia focussed her attention on Belle’s question, in who Aurelia could consider a foe. “I am very glad you asked me that,” She told her, as it was something she had already thought about and gathered an idea of people in her head. “Which is why we shall start,” Lydia began as she made her way over to the carriage Belle had indicated they took, opening the door. She nodded at the driver, with a brief, “Good day.” Purposely ignoring the suspicious look on his face, before facing her again. “At the Wycliff stables,” She announced. Amongst the many other things Aurelia had left a mystery to her, her mind had been replaying the things Lia had said about Edmund days before she had disappeared. “Lia had been very clear to me about her intentions to visit around that time,” She shared, though withholding the intentions Aurelia had when visiting.
As they sat back in the carriage sitting opposite each other, Belle kept up the light-hearted atmosphere through the jesting about the man prior. “50? Come on now, Belle, why ever would you stop there?” Lydia remarked with her eyebrows raised as she looked out the window at the moving view as the carriage set off. “Careful, though, for you are beginning to sound like our new Aurelia, I shall start having to look into you soon also?” She continued, the joking tone faltering slightly at the mention of her sister, though recovering the playful mood with the last phrase. “But in all seriousness, you too, you must never change. I couldn’t fathom doing this without you.”
“I’m unsure of what you mean, I pride myself on being safe,” Lydia told her, though failed in keeping her face expressionless, a smile cracking through at the disbelief they both felt for that statement. “Perhaps not, but rest assured I can take care of myself,” She told Belle, with full belief in that statement. While her siblings had done their best to support Lydia growing up, she, like them, still had to learn about the world without any real parental guidance. She believed it matured her quickly, and prepared her for whatever she could face in the future. “This is my sister, after all,” Lydia said, “There is no risk too great in getting her back.”
