Hey guys!
Since I came back on social media, I have heard that Instagram are removing likes because apparently, it damages self esteem. Here is the article:
Do you agree or disagree? Let me know in the comment section down below!
In my opinion, I think it’s stupid because I don’t see the point of removing likes on Instagram because there are people that do seek validation. Like what if I want to see the likes I get on the outfit I bought online or more pictures of my cat? I get that it can damage self esteem but removing likes isn’t going to solve the problem.

Likes were removed in Australia long ago. I can still see the likes my posts get, but not other people’s.

So you won’t see something like this:
Liked by @ThornOfRage (that’s my IG if you want to follow me if you got IG).

I would, just not the number of likes other people’s posts get.
Eg. Randomuser posts a picture.
I can’t tell how many likes their picture got.

Oooh that makes sense now.
Basically, the person will be able to see the count themselves.

Oh okay. So will I receive notifications that someone has liked my picture or video?

I don’t mind this specific fact, but. I hate this tendency when activists try to eliminate everything that might trigger/offend/upset them. It’s not the way to fix the problem.

Exactly. I think what they’re doing is pretty stupid and it would be better for people to just avoid anything that may be triggering to them like accounts that promote eating disorders which I am trying to avoid. I’m only back on IG because I was ready to come back.

And I kinda dislike this term “trigger”. I really can’t grasp it. I understand what people mean with it, but I’m not sure I ever experienced something like this. I understand how people who were hardly abused, can be very affected by some related graphic images etc. But I think that mostly what people mean by saying “I’m triggered” is that they don’t like what they see/hear and being dramatic “triggered” little bi*ches. But instead of moving on, how real adults do, they want to change the environment.

Yup, it’s getting ridiculous! When I mean triggered I meant flashbacks, panic attacks when I was talking about the serious parts.

Yeah, I get that reflex. But in this case, I couldn’t find any activist group or any one in general calling for this to happen, just the company decided to do this to further figure out how to hijack our minds. I did read some headlines about Instagram causing issues for teens, but I severely doubt that the company is doing this out of the kindness of their hearts and to protect the children. That’s my cynical worldview at least. There’s definitely going to be a monetary gain for them, based on this whole publicity controversy and all.
I might make a topic about social media hijacking our minds because it’s interesting to me and I am a willing participant here and on Instagram (and very rarely Facebook) but some of it is useful, other parts, not so much.

I don’t really care for likes honestly.

Definitely! What if we want to like something that’s cool like makeup, clothes, upcoming tours and all that?

I don’t think it really matters tbh.
I’d say this is just the company needing something to put in the annual update
The term ‘trigger’ was hijacked by reactionaries and turned into a joke when it’s something very, very real. Trigger warnings indicate to someone who may have had traumatic experiences in their life that material in the media they’re about to consume may ‘trigger’ them, in the actual psychological way the term is supposed to be used.
Reactionaries started applying it to anything they find ‘cringe’ after some weirdos on tumblr used the term supurfluously like they always do. Recently, commentators have been reclaiming the joking sense when speaking about reactionaries and the alt-right, but the actual psychological usage of the term is still used properly to this day with the idea of a ‘trigger warning’.

As always, pseudo-scientific reactionary quacks made a mountain out of a molehill and tried to say SJWs were the problem when in reality they were fighting against an opponent made of straw.
With regards to the actual topic at hand? Everything should remove public likes, what’s the point. Popularity contests are vaccuous trash anyway
