I had the idea of the war as just an interesting backdrop to set the story during the first novel draft. I thought it would be cool to have the moving political pieces be in somewhat of a shambles at the beginning of the story due to a war that had happened previously.

Oh, that is an interesting concept, yeah. I think it was a good idea on your part to have set up the setting like that

Then as I developed it more it became more of a centrepiece for the early story - and Xan (who I hadn’t made at that point) became more of a main character and important figure. I hda the idea for the seven heroes who defeated Sabre, but deliberately didn’t actually flesh them all out at first specifically for this reason. The idea that one of them would split off from the rest and start the bloodiest war in human history just fell on my lap and I loved it

I still really like Kito and Katy, but Seiko… not so much. However, I started to like him a bit in some scenes.
