Discussion: The Rainbow Poppy

I think I need to clarify. I didn’t wear a white poppy to be difficult. I wore both to say “I remember and respect the soldiers that have fallen before, but I’m also praying that this never happens again”

Oh yeah oops

I guess my confusion came from the fact that most people arguing about it online bring up Alan Turing

I didn’t say it as that they were more important.
Or that they were trying to take that stance. Just that everyone as a whole regardless of gender, race, sexuality, religion, culture etc come under the red poppy. They don’t under the rainbow one.
Nothing about importance.

I think that LGBTQ+ representatives do way too much to separate themselves from everyone else, while wanting to be accepted.

That’s what I thought.

Not that I have a problem with the LGBT community, it’s just that I have a problem if it’s been forced onto children or if people shove their sexual orientation in other people’s faces.

So I kinda see the outrage on this one because this is not about LGBT soldiers since the Poppy does signify the blood of the soldiers that died for the UK.

Whoops, I definitely meant World War I (Great War) which was the nickname for it at the time. Definitely didn’t claim as much lives as the second one though…

… the Romans?

That’s awesome! (Though they did colonize those countries, I’m glad that the people helped too.)

Ohh, no wonder Veterans Day is that day.

This I completely agree with.

I’m not sure how the LGBT community was supposed to go about this in a non-controversial way:

Changing the OG poppy - This would been seen as disrespectful especially for the patriotic Brits + would probably be told to make their own version

Making their own version like this current poppy - Seen as separating

Do nothing - Back to square one where they have to prove that LGBT history is even a thing

Yes haha. LGBTQ+ people are everywhere! It’s just that they spent most of history hiding that part of their identity. They definitely existed, though. I mean, if no one knows you’re gay, what is there to stop you from joining the army, even with a rule against homosexuality? There would have been gay men in the Roman Army in particular.

I have a meme for this…

But I understand. Why oppress someone for who they love and how they express themselves?

Did you see that video floating around on Twitter where they found mummified bodies in Pompeii thought to be a gay couple? It was a few months ago though.

What do you all think of this?

I mean it’s pretty clear the people who have an issue with it are more just homophobic. Dehumanising soldiers seems to be the norm, and I don’t particularly accept that personally. I think the more colours and the more personalised poppies get, the better.

So long as the LGBT+ ones raise funds for appropriate charities (Maybe for current LGBT+ soldiers, since they exist) who cares? Don’t we sweep gay people under the rug enough?

That’s near enough what I think, as long as the money goes to charity it’s no big deal

This is interesting, it kinda seems like you’re under the impression ancient Romans were homophobic. I have an interesting fact for you, as an Ancient Roman history enthusiast!

Being gay as it’s seen today is very different to how it was seen back then! Same-sex couples didn’t get married in Ancient Rome but they very much existed, this was mostly because marriage was more for status, convenience, furthering a legacy or simply for procreation, (Or all of the above) there simply wasn’t any use for gay couples to get married! But as I say, a ton of Roman emperors and military elites had an awful lot of gay sex, it just wasn’t stigmatised like it is now!

The thing is, in order to exclude gay people from your army, you have to know they’re gay! And gay guys don’t all look like James Charles now, let alone back then

No, I meant that the Romans were homosexual too. Definitely gay as well

I still want to know what you all think

The rainbow poppy shouldn’t have been created imo. The poppy represents everyone who died in world war |, it shouldn’t be changed to represent a small group of people.
