Lorelai looked shocked and her mouth hung open. Peckerhead giggled at her, but her throat was still a little croaky from her earlier sobbing. “Why are you making a silly expression like that? Your face looks really funny when you do that.”
Though quickly her face disappeared and went back to normal. Peckerhead stopped giggling and asked her questions, until finally she got the end and Lorelai responded, “This isn’t really the kind of question you’d ask your dad, sweetheart.” Lorelai shrugged. “I mean, how old are you? Probably old enough to know. … You know when you hate someone? Or they make you upset?”
Peckerhead nodded. “Yeah, there are are these two boys back in Oz, Ervic and Nikko, and they always upset me.”
“Then you might flip them off. Give them the bird. There’s lots of names. I mean, you can also flip off your friends for fun, or when they annoy you. It has many uses, really.”*
Her eyes bulged. “So it’s a bad thing?” Suddenly very aware that she was flipping Lorelai off, she pushed her finger down with her other hand and held onto her fist. “Okay. I think I get it, but one thing, I wouldn’t want to give someone a bird if they upset me.”
