César clutched the soft scarf around his neck, this time giving what was unmistakably a derisive laugh. “We don’t sound like that,” he said, wrinkling his nose pointedly at the exaggerated bounce in Jakob’s tone. “Besides, I don’t hate the uniform. It has too much ornaments, and the white is too bright. Not to mention how easy it is to dirty-” César accusingly waved his sleeve at Jakob’s face once more, “-and I don’t like the collar.” He pulled at the muffler slightly to show as little of the ruffles he could while still making a point. “But it is the uniform, and I am good-looking enough for people to see past it, I think! And if you think I cannot do those high-fives, you are wrong,” he added fiercely.
With that, César snatched Jakob’s arm, prompting it up just so that he could hit his hand, clean and precise. He did wince at the movement, but straightened up right after, looking very self-assured.
It was a great contrast to Jakob’s momentary, softened gaze. Which César did catch -only to dismiss it as being linked to the high-five. “What, is there a specific way to hit?” he asked stiffly, opening his mouth to continue criticising the practice.
Fortunately, Jakob’s ears were spared the moment César felt the latter’s arm snake around his shoulders, efficiently silencing any coming complaint. He frowned, the smoky scent of leather reaching the tip of his nose. How unusual. Regardless, it wasn’t unpleasant. Not at all. Still, César shut his eyes as soon as Jakob assumed the stance of a conquistador, a wave of uneasiness hitting him as the ramp slid beneath his thighs. The climbing felt dizzying, and not half-a-second into it, César was sure he was never trying it again.
“Is it over?” he said loudly when they eventually came to a halt. “Thank goodness…” He cracked open an eyelid, expecting -and very much hoping- to find the white walls and hardwood flooring of the dormitory extending before them.
