We’re goin’ back a bit here 
I loved Streets of Rage growing up, it is an all-time classic for a reason. The original beat 'em ups really set the stage for a lot of games to come. I also liked Double Dragon, as well. The music, the presentation all of that kinda stuff. It was great for the time especially!
Personally, the more modern versions and updates to these kinds of games have been coming out are improving on the genre hugely. Games like Scott Pilgrim perfected the pixel art style and gameplay to the point I don’t think it can really be topped. While Castle Crashers may well be the all-time best side-scrolling beat 'em up ever made. If you haven’t tried it out, trust me, you won’t regret it!

Also, Katana Zero is a pretty good example too! That game has one hell of a narrative
