Tiana was a very happy little girl. Despite growing up in New Orleans with next to nothing, she was always surrounded by her loving family, and given the chance to dream big. The biggest of these dreams was the dream to open up and run her very own restaurant. And though she was often put down and told this would never be possible, she didn’t stop trying. In high school, Tiana suffered with a very bad skin problem-acne. She always seemed to be covered in bumps and rashes on her face and body. Because of this, she was often the target of bullying and teasing in her school. She was never popular in class-known as “the girl with frog-skin” or “the baking girl”-as she often baked treats for her classmate’s birthdays. However, her kindness and tolerance stood out-especially to a boy in her grade called Naveen. Naveen was popular and extremely flirtatious-and born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His family was so wealthy they rivaled royalty. Almost everything about him was very unimpressive to Tiana. However, she eventually did fall in love with him-and he fell in love with her, changing for the better. Around this time, her skin started to clear up as well-much to her delight. Still, she’s always been a bit anxious the acne will come back. Soon becoming just as popular as Naveen, they became the lovebirds of the school, graduating together and soon after, getting married. He was by her side as she worked through college, studying everything related to business management and culinary. And he was by her side as she finally achieved her dream-opening Tiana’s Palace, her restaurant. Everything was lovely, each day a new adventure with Naveen by her side. Until Naveen got sick. Really, really sick. At only the age of twenty-two, Tiana watched as her husband, the love of her life, and high school sweetheart took his last breath. Now a widow, she felt alone. She had her friends, yes, but she isolated herself, even from her restaurant. A few months later, Tiana’s Palace was closed and sold to become someone else’s dream. No one in New Orleans really knew what had happened to her. Tiana had packed her bags and moved to the quiet, mysterious town of Las Levendas and gotten a job as a waitress. No one would ever find her here. Maybe this would be a fresh start.
