Mental health in stories

Making people who have certain mental health issues seem like villains.

I don’t whether that’s because the mental health problems are causing the bad behaviour or what but seriously.

Don’t just watch a movie about it. They are so inaccurate. Split is a bad example of schizophrenia. Although, we love James McAvoy. People with schizophrenia and/or personality disorders are not going to kidnap you and then keep you prisoners. I’m not saying they can’t, I’m saying that you shouldn’t expect them to.

Mental health works on a spectrum. It’s not a case of you have it or you don’t, some people are further down the spectrum on others. People show different signs and emotions, they also 9/10 behave differently than someone who also has the same mental health problem. People respond to things differently. Two people may both have depression but they both respond to it differently. Same thing with other mental health disorders.

If you are in a ‘dark place,’ that doesn’t give you the right to be an idiot. Sure, you may be grouchy but don’t let that cloud people’s image if you. I’m looking at you Mr Star.

In the words of Jess Glynne, we’re different and the same. We are all equal in our rights and as citizens but it’s good to be unique and have something that makes you, you. If you are going to portray something that many people suffer with, be polite and courteous. Make them equal as a human but give them their own personality. Having ADHD, isn’t a personality trait. Thanks for listening.
