The house always wins

The house always wins is a key law every gambler must learn. No matter how much you win, the house always wins more off you delusional suckers. However, perhaps it is worth the sacrifice—for the win, or the thrill, or the acclaim of just being luckier.

The House in question is St. Augustine’s University, located in Niʻihau, Hawaii, a private island in the state of Paradise. That alone should tell you everything about the island and the university situated upon it: filthy rich, corrupt, and with a bloody history.

Whether you’re rich, poor with a scholarship and a lack of sense, or simply a Hawaiian local from another island, St. Augustine is always willing to screw you over and take its portion of the pot. The university is hailed for its environmental programs and its resources, due to it being funded by the richest moguls and tycoons in the United States.

If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.

Murder is relatively easy to cover up here; after all, it’s private and practically out of the purview of federal and local governments due to clever lobbying. It’s not too common, mind you, otherwise, the elite would never dare to send their progeny here. But one has been known to bet their life on a good gamble and lose.

While the university pretends to be unaware and claims it’s just your standard degree mill, underneath the veneer of privilege and not-so-clear-clear water exists a gambling system among its students. Here, students aren’t ranked by trivial matters like grades, extracurriculars, or talent. Instead, they are ranked by the roll of the dice and how well they can count (or fudge) cards. Those unlucky enough to lose find themselves on the bad end of their fellow students, allowing them to be terrorized by those who know how to play a good round of blackjack.

Side bets are common, and any gamble or game goes. And we all know, if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.

Lady Luck is a fickle mistress indeed.

A new semester begins at St. Augustine’s. With beautiful waters, clean sand, and the perfect sun for a tan, it is also a black hole for money to be poured into again. Be prepared to pay the house their percentage this year, students.

Plot Clarification

So, The House Always Wins will be a roleplay set in St. Augustine, following your characters as they navigate the gambling system henceforth known as the Kakegurui system. While inspired by Bet, Kakegurui, and Ninth House, mostly aesthetics, settings, or ideas are taken. The roleplay will be wildly different. The Kakegurui system functions as a ranking, where students are ranked by how much money they’ve won or lost by gambling. Those in the negatives are fair game to be terrorized, often become embroiled in debt, and get the worst when it comes to opportunities, facilities (dorms, classes, etc.). The “house” is an active lender, so even the poor can attempt to play by borrowing against their assets, their credit, or even their lives.

Star Clarification

The more stars, the more likelihood the descriptor will occur. In regard to this roleplay, there will be high stakes, because it’s gambling. A good amount of mystery surrounds the background of the university and the gambling system for characters to pursue and solve. And a low amount of murder that will most likely occur to NPCs, so long as characters play nicely. (Pun intended.)

Roleplay Requirements

Two-character minimum and maximum requirement for everyone until a certain date before the roleplay begins. This is just to ensure things run smoothly and I can handle characters and their stories as they come in.
Closer to the start date, players will be PMed by me to discuss plots, possible hints, and any key information relevant to their character in the roleplay.
All characters have to be 18+
