I shrugged as he asked the question. “Why fix what ain’t broken” I repeated a line my teacher used to say. “We were taught that we were born with a gift, something the Seleniums threw away because they got blinded by the greed of wanting more. they taught us to embrace what we were born with and we should be happy with what we had” I said and looked at him. “Obviously, now I know there’s more to it. I know it’s not greed but rather curiosity of how far you can take it. The constant excitement of the challenge to improve something and push the limits, going beyond nature and anything known to men kind” I said with a smile. “Making something new, rather than live with something you always had”.
I chuckled when Damien said he was getting lonely. “What, am I not all the company you need?” I asked as I leaned against the wall with crossed arms. “That hurts you know” I added teasingly.
Only when we were with just the two of us, I was able to fully let loose and joke like this, because I trusted Damien more than anyone else in Selenium. I didn’t know if it was just his personality rubbing off on me, if he programmed something into my brain that made it, or if I just don’t remember if I felt this close to my family, but for me, it felt like he was the only person I’ve ever felt this safe with.
I looked down at the man who was unconscious. I never was close with the cadets, and seeing how this was war, there were bound to be people who would get killed and people who will kill. “What, so we’re keeping him alive a little longer, just to kill him later?” I asked with a raised eyebrow. “If you’re going to kill him anyway, why give him a chance to escape or get rescued?” I asked.
