Unlike her sister, Reina slept as long as she could. She wasn’t interested in the whole Blue Royalty thing that Sadie had quickly gained an interest in. Popularity didn’t matter to her. She just wanted to make some friends and feel like she actually fit in. She didn’t want to be the outcast anymore. She woke up to her alarm, which left her barely enough time to throw on a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, and a jacket before grabbing her stuff and walking out the door with Sadie. It was only after Reina separated from her sister in the decked out halls of the school that Reina finally checked the messages on her phone. She was assigned a guy she didn’t even know for Secret Santa, and the terms of how the gift should be for points made it even harder. Shoving her phone in her pocket, she went to her locker to put her stuff away. She had no idea how she was going to do the secret Santa.

Safiya had grown to love the holiday season.
She adored it.
Everything was jolly, merry, and just seemed a little bit more optimistic.
In her fuzzy sleeves that her arms arent long enough for, making her feel dainty.
And small,
Cozy and warm inside of her hoodie that worked like a forcefield against the wind.
Like using your blanket with the fan on but to go.

Of course, that meant she’d have to put a tab in her own individual beliefs in order for there to be the harmony that she so desires.
She’ll take a bullet for them to be happy, this was nothing
she’ll smile and pretend to be heterosexual.
And boy does she know how to put on an act.

This morning, she had chosen to walk to school, she missed walking around everywhere. Watching the sidewalk slide under her like a conveyor belt when she didn’t want to look up. And of course, take in the view, even if it was something plain. She just loved to take in the oxygen deep into her lungs. It reminded her of what she was grateful for. It felt like an instant, but it was worth forever.

She arrived at school shortly, and she was there early, like she usually is. Safiya stood anxiously outside for a while -totally worth it- leaning back against a wall until she got a notification and slid her finger to read the message quickly. It was from blue royalty. She read, AH! she was so excited about her secret santa, she pursed her lips to hide her smile. Gotta keep it a secret . But oooooooooo she got all giddy. She really wanted to talk about it but oh well, she wasn’t gonna ruin it for the rest of us.

Then when the group of students started walking in, Safiya followed, walking around the school, just hanging out for a bit since she didn’t have to go anywhere yet. She peered into one of the classrooms and remembered this was where Reina’s locker was. I should talk to her she thought, sliding her hands behind her back and intertwining her own fingers.

Safiya walked over to the other side of the hall trying to get herself together, Be cool, be cool She reminded herself before getting there and pressed the side of her fist against one of the lockers near Reina’s. “Hey” She looked at her face in a composed manner, waiting for a facial response. “Who’d you get for secret santa” She asked with a smirk. She knew, what a cliche, girl has a crush on best friend’s sibling. But god, she was something else. Safiya may be cool, but her eyes said it all. Her big innocent brown eyes say more than most people do in a lifetime. They’re silent but deadly, and often the flaw in the system when she lies. And right now, they were ratting her out.

Reina had just opened up her locker as a girl came over towards her. Reina turned at the sound of footsteps approaching her and spotted Safiya just as she rested her hand against the locker right by Reina’s. Reina didn’t know Safiya well, but she did know Safiya because she was closer with Sadie. Reina hardly knew anyone in the school, but Safiya was one of very few that she knew. She smiled at Safiya. “Hey back.” Reina pulled her phone out of her pocket, glancing back at the message. “I am getting a gift for one of the many people I still don’t know. Dorian, and I am completely clueless on what to do for the gift. You?” Reina was completely clueless to what could have been going on in Safiya’s mind. Reina had too much going on in her head to even wonder. Despite Reina’s smile, there was a lot going on in her mind. Everything from what to do for secret Santa, to hoping she wouldn’t make a fool of herself or that nobody would see what she actually dealt with. She kept her bright smile on for the world. The perfect, happy girl for her family aside from Sadie, the smiling front of a girl who fits in at school, hiding her deepest troubles that only Sadie knew any part of.

Safiya smiled back, putting down her fist and sliding her fingers into her back pocket as Reina began to speak, giving her full attention. She nodded, listening to what she said. Saf was acting cool, but it was in her nature to be a people pleaser. It would be simply uncharacteristic for her to say anything else. “I’ll trade ya.” She half smiled, “If that’s allowed” She laughed slightly.

At home, favours usually put Mamoud on a pedestal, her parents didn’t seem to like her as much, but when she tried it outside of her home, people usually liked her for being nice. But she wants to go beyond that. Always, she’s a such an overachiever, defines the term teacher’s pet , and then does more, to fill the gaps. Which was already enough, but she especially wants Reina to be impressed by her. Who knows she might even make cookies, crazy bih .

Reina slid her phone back into her pocket and turned, shutting the door of her locker. Looking back to Safiya, Reina leaned back against her closed locker, shoving her hands into her pockets. She smiled wide, upon hearing the offer of trading, then with a slight laugh she said, “Wish we could, but I think that’d be frowned upon.” Reina paused for a moment. “Even if it’s not allowed though, I guess nothing could stop us from doing whatever we wanted.” Reina focused in on Safiya with a slight questioning look to her smile. “Why the offer though, who’d you get? Or are your lips sealed?” Secret Santa only had to be kept from the person you give a gift to. Reina was definitely grateful just for Safiya being welcoming. Just by her not pushing her away, Reina felt like there was actually a chance she could fit in. A chance that she wouldn’t be the outcast. Reina just wanted to fit in and feel accepted, even if nobody truly knew her.

Safiya’s eyes followed Reina’s movement quietly, happy she had her attention. "Wish we could, but I think that’d be frowned upon.” Safiya frowned at her teasingly. “Even if it’s not allowed though, I guess nothing could stop us from doing whatever we wanted.” Now we’re talking. She thought to herself, and smirked at her again, looking into her eyes directly and tilting her head a little bit. There was almost a little bit of tension in the action. No, no, bla bla . Safiya noticed that Rei still looked on the fence though, and so she stared a little bit longer while they were silent. Hoping to intimidate her.

“Why the offer though, who’d you get? Or are your lips sealed?” Safiya crossed her arms in front of her and straightened her neck. “You can’t tell her” She said in a quiet voice, getting Reina to confirm.

Safiya came in closer to Reina and looked side to side with her eyes before covering the right side of her mouth with her palm. She whispered into her ear, “Sadie” quietly and then backed up to where she was before. She knew she had just given up a secret that wouldn’t be gaining her any good points with the majority of the kids at school, but her crush mattered more. And nobody would ruin secret santa for Sadie anyways, it would take an actually heartless person. Which believe it or not, wasn’t here. She would remain unaffected if she traded secret santa’s, she’s friendly with everyone and she could make her way around, doing the extra step so that her friend who was new at school didn’t have to was fine by her. Plus it could be their little secret.

“So what do you think?” Safiya mirrored Reina by putting her hands in her pockets and smiled widely. She looked Reina up and down. She tilted her head to the left, “Do we have a deal?” Saf asked slyly.

Reina felt extremely awkward as Safiya made direct eye contact. Although, Reina felt awkward enough around just about anyone already. The longer Safiya had stared, the more uncomfortable Reina became. She felt as though Safiya could see right through her, able to see everything that troubles her, everything she did her best to keep hidden from the world. At Safiya’s words, Reina nodded. “Got it. My lips are sealed.” As soon as Reina confirmed that she wouldn’t say anything, Reina’s discomfort increased exponentially when Safiya came to whisper in her ear. Reina stiffened, clearly feeling awkward and uncomfortable. Reina just couldn’t help it. Practically the entirety of the senior class was extremely hot, and Reina was uncomfortable and self conscious enough as is. Reina was somewhat surprised when Safiya said that Sadie was the person she had to do a secret Santa gift for. To Reina, that would be extremely easy, since Reina had known Sadie her entire life. Giving an awkward smile, Reina nodded. “Deal. It’ll be a piece of cake.”

Safiya noticed Reina’s posture, and then her choppy sentences. So she decided to try and tone it down a little bit with the whisper, trying to be more gentle, but then she stiffened when Safiya came closer to her ear. And Safiya couldn’t help but giggle. She thought it was cute. “Great.” She smiled, “See ya.” Then Saf turned around to walk to class. Still trying to look attractive while walking away, which was lowkey clear to tell, but not enough for Reina to acknowledge it officially.

Her long hair swung over her shoulders and she smiled to herself cheekily. Off to first period, science class. She could already tell, next semester was gonna be a hoot. Ah, she loved her friends.

Safiya had been listening to music all morning while doing her makeup, she was ready for the day and certainly dressed for the occasion.

Today she would be giving her secret santa gift to Sadie, well “her” because of her trade with Reina. She had gotten Dorian a fake sword thing. She saw it when she was christmas shopping at the mall, she was in Bed Bath and Beyond. What could she say, little porcelain gnome men were her favorite. And she just loved walking in her winter wonderland that smelled of patriotic winter scents where the racks they kept their products on crawled under her nails with their subtle metal feel. She would’ve gone there with someone but she liked the tradition of keeping her gift a secret. Even though GOLLY GEE it was difficult for her to pick something. And after ravaging all of the shelves that existed someplace in the store, it all came down to that very gift. She’s still having a panic attack about how she’s convinced he’s gonna hate it though. She had stayed in the group price range, just a little bit above the medium. And she thought Dorian was the type of guy to enjoy it. And it qualified as a “threatening gift”. Oh gosh .

At her locker, Safiya found a charm bracelet in her locker. It was silver and shined flawlessly under the light, you could tell it was brand new, and so were alot of things in the school lockers on this very day. It was a heartwarming feeling to receive gifts, and for those who believe, to start a new chapter. Safiya expected pure joy today, the last day before winter break started. Although that was certainly not what was coming. She lowered her jaw, admiring her bracelet and immediately secured it around her wrist frictionlessly, smirking to herself. She adored it, especially since it was a collectable thing, she could buy so many little charms, and the jingle of it when she tested it out was so cute and feminine. It made Safiya grin cheekily. Soon her smile faded away when she turned around to look out into the hallway.

Zion woke up and got ready for school, tying their back in a half-up-half-down bun hairstyle. They got dressed, selecting a somewhat festive outfit to wear to school. They stopped to admire themself in the mirror before exiting their room and walking downstairs to find that their mom had already made breakfast. Once they’d finished eating, they put their shoes on and took their backpack into their car, driving to school. They knew that the Secret Santa exchange was today and that, combined with the fact that it was almost winter break, fuelled their excitement as they drove.

They parked their car in the school lot and got out, retrieving their backpack from the trunk. Locking the car, they walked into the school and found their locker. Upon opening it, they found a card, inside of which was $20. They read the note with a small chuckle, putting the cash in their wallet. They closed their locker, walking down the hallway until they spotted Safiya. “Hey!” They said, waving at her and smiling. “Did you get your gift from your Secret Santa?” They asked, hoping that she had received it and liked it.

Safiya was making a bit of a face at the sight of the kids on the other side of the hall arguing, it made her a little worried about them but she only looked for a couple of seconds before she heard Zion’s voice behind her. Safiya slammed her locker shut and turned around to face them, turning her frown into a forced smile. “Hey!” She said back in an enthusiastic voice. They asked about her gift and Saf replied, “Yea,” extending her arm out for Zion to see the shiny, charmless thing. “I got this bracelet.” She said with a smile, then paused, pulling it back and holding her arm with that hand to ask, “You?”

Zion jumped, startled by the locker slamming. They quickly regained their composure, smiling as she showed them the bracelet, glad that she liked it. “That’s a really cute bracelet!” They told her, not wanting to let on that it was them just yet. “I got 20 bucks, which is cool. I can use it to get some new baking supplies. Who do you think your person was?” They asked, curious to see what her answer would be.

“Thanks!” She smiled, “I loved it.” she said, making sure to be appreciative. Zion said they got twenty bucks which made Safiya laugh slightly in response. The way they said it was just funny she couldn’t explain it. “Ooh,” She let go of her arm, “I know what to getcha next year.” Safiya winked playfully. When Zion asked who she thought her person was, Safiya didn’t react, but she got a little bit suspicious. “Why do you ask?” She asked them mischievously, raising her brow a little bit. She was wondering who got her, she had figured that it was probably someone who knew her well, she has a thing for sentimental things and her gift was perfect, but then again it’s a pretty basic kind of bracelet so who knows. She was also curious who the dud who got a wad of cash for Zion was, it was low key not putting in an effort. It was just on the safe side to be honest. Which, if it had happened to Safiya she wouldn’t bat an eye but she just wanted to see people as happy as she was when she opened her own gift.

Hearing that she liked the bracelet made Zion smile even more. They laughed as she said she knew what to get them next year.

“ Why do you ask? ”

They bit the inside of their to now conceal their smile. “Oh, no reason.” They responded nonchalantly to her question, deciding that they’d hold off on telling her a little longer, just to build the suspense. Am I being overly dramatic? They asked themself, knowing that the answer was definitely yes. They thought for a second about who their person could have been. “Mine was probably one of the guys.” They commented about the cash they’d received. “There’s a few that come to my mind when I think about it.”

“Oh, no reason.” Safiya smirked, crossing her arms in a gentle motion. “Okay, Zion.” She teased. Saf didn’t need to hear a confirmation, so she agreed. If that was what they insisted, she shall trust them on it.

“Mine was probably one of the guys.” She laughed, the next thing they said made her laugh harder, looking down at the floor tiles and then back up at Zion, nodding yes. She could also think of a few people that would do that. “C’mon, we’ve gotta get to class.” She fixed her backpack straps over her shoulders and smiled at them. “After you” She gestured politely. “Let’s go” She said nonchalantly, in her easy going manner, as she picked up beside them.

Safiya knew that she had math next. And a ccording to past knowledge stored in the back of her memory, Zion’s class was on the other side of the hallway corner. But she’ll see when they go differing ways when they depart.

They nodded in agreement, beginning to walk towards their first-period class alongside Safiya. They had Spanish first period, and they knew from past observations that Safiya had math first since they pass that class on their way every morning.

Alright, I’ve had my fun. They thought biting the inside of their cheek to keep themself from smiling. “I’m glad you liked the bracelet.” They let the words slip from their mouth nonchalantly as they walked, one hand holding their backpack.

I was staring into the fire, almost transfixed, when a voice broke me out of my trance. A heavily accented Japanese girl’s vice chirped, “Hillo!” I assumed she accidentally combined hi and hello. I turned, spotting a cute, petite Asian in a swan floatie, wearing a white swimsuit. I flushed pink, the swimsuit not leaving much to be imagined. “Hey. I’m Jane!” I called, turning my body to better talk.
