Should Halle Bailey have been cast as Ariel?

Honestly in the end I do get the persepectives on both sides though. I mean I’m asian and hollywood has been white washing and ignoring my race for years. So I can understand why alot of red heads might not like the fact their representation is slowly getting erased by mainstream media and how black people would like to see more diverse representation on screen.

But in the end we should just see what Halle does with the role. I mean she has a background in music so atleast she will be better than Emma “Autotune” Watson. Not too hate on her too much, but man did they autotune her singing.

Yeah, which is why I said “exclusively”. Black redheads are rarer than white redheads but they do still exist so the idea that only white actors should play redheads isn’t entirely correct.

I don’t get why race matters though. If the actress or actor is good, then what’s wrong with it? So yes, Halle Bailey should be casted as Ariel. She’s very talented and I think she would make a great Ariel.

I think what made this really funny for me is that people started trying to use science to explain why a fictional character, a friking mermaid could never be black. A sea creature that majority don’t even believe exists can only be white. I had to laugh.

Where on earth did they find science about mermaids?

I don’t even know but I was seeing it on Facebook. It was really funny :joy: Humans never cease to amaze me

Anyway my opinion on this is that I think Halle would make a great Ariel however, I would’ve preferred if they could make new black princesses instead

Looks at Disney

Agreed just creating a new compelling character is much better than randomly race or even gender swapping existing characters in general.Disney should try to push for my diversity in general.

Personally, I don’t agree with the choice. For a really long time Ariel was my favorite princess, and it feels wrong knowing that Ariel will look drastically different from what I know and love. There are other princesses that would work better having their race changed than her in my opinion. (Life Cinderella, I would have even understood aurora being changed, or Belle). And from what I have heard of Halle Bailey’s voice, I’m not a big fan either… This is probably the first time I’m not looking forward to a Disney movie, because I’m terrified that it will ruin one of my favorite princesses. I’ve liked all the other live action adaptations though, so when I eventually watch it, I’ll keep an open mind.

Mostly because every time a non-white character is cast as white everyone and their grandmother gets their panties in a twist. Not saying you should whitewash, its just what happens.

I’m going have to respectfully disagree. It’s your opinion, of course, but for the longest time my two favourite princesses were Tiana and Mulan (they still are), if a white person played these two characters, the stories wouldn’t make sense, Tiana because she’s the first black disney princess, who lives in the south and Mulan because she saves China, with the idea that she’s a Chinese woman. Nothing about these will make sense, if played by an actress of a different race. But if you really think about it, Ariel is just a girl who wants to see land and experience things she can’t do without legs. I wasn’t aware that that needed a certain race. Disney could make her any race and the story would still make sense. You could argue that it might change the magic of the Princess and the Frog. But it won’t, because I know that some small black child in the theatre will love seeing someone that looks like them on screen, being a beautiful mermaid, who can do whatever she puts her heart to. I think that’s a good message.

There’s the argument of ‘what if that child realises their favourite princess doesn’t look like them anymore?’ To me that’s a stupid argument because that child can turn to all 7 white princesses. That’s not including Anna and Elsa. Why is there only one princess that is specific to each minority race when there are 7+ white princesses? I’m mixed-race and there isn’t a disney princess who looks exactly like me but if we cast different races for the roles, then there might be someone who has the same looks as me. I would really love a mixed princess so I hope Disney gets to that soon.

I can’t persuade you about her voice, but I love her music and she sounds like a mermaid to me. Whatever that means? I love Forgive Me, cos it’s just too good not to. I don’t know what music taste you have but I honestly recommend their music and you should give it go.

I’m really happy for Halle and this movie will get a black queen known in a wider audience.

EDIT: Spelling and grammar.

She should however I would have had preferred if they made her wear a red wig. Idk the red hair just makes her more Ariel to me. But I want to ask you said: should she have been cast as Ariel.
Does this mean that she isn’t casted anymore?

Actually, Tiana’s story would still make sense. She just could never be changed due to the backlash that would occur.

Her being black makes less of who she is than her economic status.

Tiana is a girl who grew up very poor in New Orleans, and had to work hard to for everything she had. That would stay the same no matter the race.

The message shouldn’t be limited to identifying with your race though.

A message saying that you can be any kind of person you want to be, and can follow your dreams and your heart, should be to anyone, regardless of race or even gender.

If a small child doesn’t think they can do anything like the princess, just because they look different, makes me lose hope for the human race.

From what I’ve seen young children see the least difference between races. They see other children and have the attitude of “you look different, ok, let’s be friends.” Children don’t separate each other by their differences, they find the common interests of something as simple as a favorite color and choose to become friends.

You have to remember, few of the Disney Princesses are original. For example, Merida, who is very specifically Scottish, and Moana, a Polynesian Islander.
The others are all from fairytales (or history in Pocahontas’s case), and where were most of those tales originated? Europe. Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Ariel, Rapunzel, and Snow White. All of these princesses’ stories originated in Europe, so they are going to be similar in looks and race. Even the story that inspired The Princess and the Frog, (The Frog Prince) originated in Europe. Unlike the others, it was drastically changed in where the story took place and given a more modern spin. That allowed flexibility in the character’s looks which led to Tiana being black.
The other stories have all taken place closer to their original story so they should look the way they do. Wouldn’t it be stranger to for example, have a story that takes place in a location and time period that was primarily white, and not have the character be white?

Would you not feel hurt by having a character that you’ve loved be changed into a completely different person?

Hypothetically, there was a group of characters with only one being white. Would you not in any way be saddened by having one of the others (who looked more different compared to the others) turned into a white character?

I see both sides of this, and I do support that there should be more diversity in all forms of entertainment. However, I can’t deny my hurt of knowing that one of my favorite princesses is being changed.

I don’t really care if the people in the remakes look exactly like the person they’re supposed to play. Only talent matters to me. Like, if they picked another actress that was a redhead and wasn’t that great at singing, I would really, really hate it. I mean, the core of the movie is Ariel’s voice- not her hair! So the people picking Ariel would want someone for their voice, not how they look.
