let’s just put them on the roleplay thread. i think of the roleplay thread as what’s happening during a focused session of D&D and this is more about casual chat
yeah, most D&D lets you get as into being your character as you want, which is definitely nice for beginning.
i really want to be able to make wiki posts for things like initiative scores so that way they’re easy to keep straight but i don’t think i can
Okay, that completely works for me. Off topic posting on the official thread is blurred and then strategy is a part of the post, preferably in character.
exactly
Great! Sorry, it just took me a really long time to get that. I have no idea as to why.
totally fine ![]()
I have a question about the stats we had to fill out (charisma, wisdom, intelligence…), what do they affect?
excellent question! short answer is: it’s complicated
long answer
Those 6 stats essentially describe how good or bad your character is at doing certain actions. Based on your stats, you will get a bonus, which is the more important part. D&D uses dice rolls to determine the outcome of damages (you may have noticed damage amounts and hit dice being listed as dies and not values). These modifiers are applied to a d20. Most stats are also connect with skills, which are what you use for most things.
Stats also affect more basic things including: your passive perception (how good you are at noticing things without paying attention), your hit points, and your armor class (AC)
If you’d like to see stats in action go up to the halfling and challenge her to a game of cards.
Worth noting: I might tell you to roll with a specific skill. If you have an argument for why a different skill should be allowed to be substituted, I am more than willing to listen and let you roll a different stat.
Additionally, different responses to a threat will merit different stat rolls.
Imagine that there’s a boulder coming at you.
Dexterity - helps you jump out of the way of the rock
Strength - breaking the boulder with your fist
Constitution - ducking down and hoping not to get hurt badly
That really is complicated
Basically, the stats represent how good you are at doing specific subsets of things. If you’re trying to do something, one of the stats will almost always be applicable to what you’re trying to do. The book breaks down standard uses for each stat but essentially
Constitution - actually pretty useless, anything that’s challenging your fortitude, like poison, would be affected by this
Intelligence - book learning / what you know
Wisdom - applied intelligence
Charisma - pretty much anything social, includes some magical abilities
Strength - affects how hard you can stab/punch things
Dexterity - dodging and hand-eye coordination
you don’t really need to worry about a lot of though, and you’ll get the hang of how it works after some practice
Awesome! kinda glad I didn’t waste points on constitution, whatever that is Now I just have to approach one of the characters, right?
yep!
It honestly seems a lot more complicated than it is. I
You’ll start getting the hang of it.
it’s not useless, but it won’t come up that much. hit points really are the main thing it affects that you should worry about.
This! I promise it’s not half as complicated as it sounds.
It really depends on what kind of character you want. Constitution is basically bulk. Like how healthy you are. But I have noticed it doesn’t help that much.
it’s also not that important for the most part because you’re not the DM and don’t have to figure out what the appropriate thing to measure is.
From the player’s handbook:
Constitution checks are uncommon, and no skills apply to constitution checks, because the endurance this ability represents is largely passive rather than involving a specific effort on the part of a character or monster.
… (constitution saves are pretty much always gonna be poison as far as i’m concerned)
accomplish tasks like the following:
- hold your breath
- march or labor for hours without rest
- go without sleep
- survive without food or water
- quaff an entire stein of ale in one go
