All About Performance Art

Performance art is a term that covers any form of art in which an action is carried out by the artist. This includes the more commonly thought of examples such as theatre and dance but also includes opera and even magic, among others.

There are essentially four main elements in performance art and they are time, space, the performer’s body and a relationship between the performer and the audience. Performance art can take place in any form of venue, both conventional and unconventional, and can last for any length of time.

  • Have you ever participated in a form of performance art?
  • Have you ever watched a form of performance art?
  • What are your thoughts on it?

Ok so I actually love performance art

I’ve studied quite a few pieces throughout my undergrad and I love how weird they can get as well as how they can force us to confront uncomfortable truths

Some of my favourite pieces are Nam June Paik’s TV Buddha, Marina Abramović’s Rhythm 0, and Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece and Wish Tree (I actually did a piece inspired by this one for an assignment)

I wouldn’t necessarily call improv performance art

a performing art, maybe and a form of drama, for sure but not performance art
