(American Street/Modern) Slang Terms 101

Hello and Welcome to my Slang Terms 101 Thread! This is for anyone that’s confused or wants to learn how to use specific words that’s around the internet or what people say in their every day life. :slightly_smiling_face:

Terms Not Used as Much

Gucci: refers to something that’s coveted; good

Ex. “I’m gucci.” OR “It’s all gucci.”

On fleek: perfectly groomed; styled

Ex. “My edges is on fleek.” OR “Eyebrows on fleek.”

Boi: another term for boy

Present Terms

Fit: an outfit

Tight: ‘‘sounds good’’; referring to something that’s great"

Ex. “That fit is [hella] tight.”

Get the strap/the strap: similiar to ‘‘get the gun’’; get work done

Ex. “Gotta get the strap.” OR “Keep fooling around and you gonna get this strap.”

Gonna/finna: another way of saying ‘‘going to’’; ‘‘intending to’’

Ex. “I’m gonna go hit up the store.” OR “I’m finna go win this.”

Bop/banger: referring to a song that’s good or great; something cool, awesome

Ex. “This songs a bop/banger.” “This party is a banger.”

Straight: another way of saying good.

*Ex. “You straight?” OR “Nothing wrong, I’m straight.”

Wayment: a way of saying ‘‘wait a minute’’

Tea: gossip

Mad: another word for extremely

Thicc: looking good; a way of saying thick

*Ex. “I met this girl last night and she was mad thicc.”

Fire: really good

Ex. “That artwork is fire!”

Low-key: sort of; ''don’t tell anyone"
High-key: really; ‘‘out in the open’’

*Ex. “Low-key, you really don’t want to mess with him.” “I high-key feel like you should go for it.”

OG: original

G.O.A.T: ‘‘greatest of all time’’

*Ex. “Micheal Jackson is the OG of pop.” “You’re the goat for that.”

Plug: supplier; helpful

*Ex. “He’s really the plug.”

Gassing: overreacting; to be treated higher

*Ex. “My friends just gassing me up.” OR “You’re really gassing the situation.”

Boujee: acting rich

Extra: overdramatic

*Ex. “She’s so boujee.” “He’s being so extra.”

Fam: family or closest friends"

It’s lit: ‘‘it’s cool’’

I’m weak: ‘‘it’s really funny’’

Squad: group of friends

Yeet: exclamation of excitement; discarding something or said when curving a person

Curve: ignoring; avoid

Fit: hot or good looking

patching/ghosting: ignoring someone

and I oop sksksk: kind of something you say when a convo gets awkward, or a way to express thoughts such as

Where I’m from the word tight means “mean” and the word “fit” means good looking. So it’s nice to see different interpretations of the words.

‘Get that bag’ means getting a lot of money.
‘Spend that bag’ means spending a lot of money.

Tight, in New York, also means mad or angry.

And mad, in New York, is used to exaggerate.

I meant in the UK, Scottish slang is a whole other world of barely-English words and phrases :eyes:
