I’m kinda afraid of swans too. They seem dangerous ![]()
Any bird that can sit 2ft tall is dangerous in my opinion.
Very true!
Yep!
Where’s the duck option? I’m sure that I submitted it along with like 30 other animals ![]()

First Animal of the Week:
Giant Panda
Wildlife Status: Vulnerable
Population: 1,864 in the Wild
Scientific Name: Ailuropoda melanoleuca
Habitat: Temporate broadleaf and mixed forests of southwest China
The Giant Panda is one of the most iconic animal known around the world. They are the only species of bear that are herbivores. Their diet mostly is made up of bamboo, fruits and other plants that are populated in the southwest forests of China. They can weigh up to 220-230 pounds which is what gives them their robust figure. Adult Pandas can grow to the height of four feet tall. Considering I’m only 5’1 1/2 it means that the Panda is little over a foot smaller than me. The Panda must eat 26-84 pounds of bamboo depending on what part they eat of the bamboo.
As shown on the map above, the Giant Panda lived in a huge array of land in the southwest of China but due to expanding human population and development they are now only found in the regions marked in red on the map. Sadly, the Giant Panda use to be widespread throughout southern and eastern China. They even were known to be found in Myanmar and Northern Vietnam. They have been isolated to 20 sections of bamboo forest in China’s six mountain ranges Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces.
Most of the wild pandas live in the Minshan and Qinling mountains. WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) has been working alongside China’s government to make conservation’s for the wild panda’s survival. There are now 67 panda reserves that safeguard 66% of the wild pandas in the wild. Also, they have been able to safeguard 54% of the pandas natrual habitat in recent years. The government alongside the WWF have constructed bamboo corridors that connect isolated parts of the forest. These corridors can extend the panda’s territory plus help the pandas find mates to breed with.
Minshan Mountains
This mountain range forms a natural barrier between the densely populated southern and eastern provinces of China from the vast Tibetan Plateau which is the highest and largest plateau around the whole world. The provinces that surround this mountain range are Sichuan and Gansu provinces. The mountain range runs alongside the great plain of Sichuan all the way to the east of the Tibetan plateau. This barrier forms one of the most important watersheds in China.
This region is also homes to over hundreds of pandas that live in Pingwu County. They have the highest density of pandas in the world. Though the Minshan Mountains vast forests are not only the habitat of the Giant Panda. They are also home to a wealth of different species which include the dwarf blue sheep and multi-colored pheasants.
Qinling Mountains
This mountain range makes up the most critical watershed in China. It channels water into both the country’s great rivers the Yangtze and the Yellow rivers. They are located in Shaanxi Provence that makes a natural barrier between northern and southern China. The barrier actually keeps the North’s cold wind from entering the Southern land of China. The warm rains of the Southern region of China nourish a rich source of life that ranges over a variety of plants and animals.
The region is the home to over 300 hundred pandas in the wild though the pandas aren’t the only endangered animal that lives in this region. There is also the Golden Monkey, the Takin, and the crested ibis who are nested in the south. This region also is known for its long rich culture of human history which dates backs thousands of years.

I will add more facts over the next few days for our animal of the week. I will tag those who voted in the polls, submitted animals, and some others that might be interested. Oh, the one who asked which name to be put down can be both the forum username and the Instagram username or either one. That is totally up to you on that choice! You can pm your usernames or fill out a secondary form to add your name to the list.
