Are there any books you love to hate?

Twilight is something else! :joy:

It epitomizes all of the worst YA romance tropes and cliches and then popularized them to the point that if your pitch didn’t emulate Twilight, or it’s various clones, in some way you probably weren’t going to get published, it changed the entire landscape of both young adult literature and television, it might be the most accomplished horribly written book ever.

Personally I hate it but think it’s funny in that ridiculous dumb way that the best poorly done things are funny.

I know right! I can’t make myself read the books anymore. It’s just as bad as Fifty shades of Grey!

I’m a little torn on that one, while Fifty Shades left out the shoe horned in LDS subtext what it lacks in religious BS it makes up for in an ignorant and offensive portrayal of BDSM and the people who take part in. It kept the, in my opinion, abusive and misogynistic aspects of Twilight but was aimed at an older audience who were less likely to be influenced by those parts. It feels like a toss up, neither of the authors are good writers, I think Stephanie gets point for being somewhat original while James straight up ripped off her story (50 Shades was originally a Twilight fanfic that got really popular), I don’t think I could call one worse than the other. I don’t think 50 Shades is as fun in how bad it is as Twilight, 50 Shades was not funny to me, just boring and poorly written.

Exactly, how I feel. It’s the only book that I actually stopped reading because it was written poorly. I did not realize Fifty Shades was a fanfic off of Twilight. That is a giant step in a totally different direction than Twilight. I thought the book must be good since it had such a big following then I tried to read it and yeah. No, not good. Honestly, I try not to judge books but those two just hit really sensitive topics in a bad way.

I think it’s purposely meant to be awful

50 Shades Of Grey

I can’t stand that franchise and I have already explained why so you don’t have to ask.

Yep, I know.

I’m not really a huge fan of The Hunger Games either. I find it boring!

Yeah, I like the movies better. The series just didn’t hold my interest after the first book. My mother loves the whole series and the movies.

I’m not a fan of the films either. I haven’t been much of a book reader lately

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid was definitely awful. But I really enjoyed the first 3 films! I had a massive crush on Devon Bostick when I was younger. Aha!

Understandable, it’s an acquired taste when watching the series.

Yeah. I have thought about re-reading the Immortal Series by Alyson Nöel. I remember the times I was so into the series when I was around 17-18 years old.

Yep, I loved the first book but I’m not even sure how to describe why I couldn’t finish the second book. It was just a weird moment when that happened to me.

I’ve never even read Fifty Shades of Grey. The first time I heard of it was in 2013 or 2014 when someone coworker was recommending it to another coworker that was looking for book recommendations. I asked what it was, and they said it was erotica. And since I hate that genre, I decided not to read it.

Good choice to go with. You didn’t miss much. The book was boring and slow in the beginning.
