Are You Learning Any Languages?

Are you learning any languages? If so, what are they?

Here are mine!

Japanese

I’m learning Japanese mainly at the moment, which I love! It’s so much fun and the pronunciation is super easy. The only struggle is Kanji. But one day I will complete my JLPT N1 and I can’t wait!

I mainly use WaniKani for help with kanji:

I love Japanese and being an intermediate has helped me to get jobs in the past, which is great!

French

I’m always learning French. All of the French people I met (excluding @SenchaStories) correct me so much when I try that I kinda get shy and don’t speak to any actual French people. That is, until you get a few drinks into me. Then I’m suddenly fluent.

Slovak

My flatmate is from Slovakia and so she teaches me odd words here and there. It’s a fun language, but it’s so hard to learn for so many different reasons! For one, the grammar :sob: But I could get over that if I just had actual learning resources! They’re really hard to find. I can’t even get this tongue twister with no vowels right. Apparently, I keep saying something like “finger…neck…through”, which doesn’t sound right to me!

Plus my accent makes me sound really cute, apparently. But I’ve met a lot of Slovak people and they say my accent is perfect when I sing this song. And I know all the words. Would you know? Music turns me Slovak :joy:

Other

I tried to learn Korean but I can’t hear the differences between some of the sounds and that really annoys me.

I’m determined to pick up a little Mandarin one day. It seems super useful.

I sometimes play around with Czech on Duolingo, but there’s this weird Czech sound that sounds like a mix between an R nd a J and I can’t do it. Slovak doesn’t have that, so Slovak pronunciation is easier for me.

My step mum is from Hungary, but I only know “czia” and “nem”.

I think, one day, I’d also like to learn Russian. But at the moment, I know too many different writing systems and it’s already confusing me. Hiragana. Katakana. Kanji. English/Romaji. Gujarati. Hindi.

What about you? Are you learning any languages? What’s it like?

I learned Sanskrit. Not just what’s taught in school but even other than that. But then its been years so i forgot most of it. I can’t speak or write it now but I can still make sense of it.

I also want to learn French and i even almost joined the classes but then i had a mind change and went with swimming classes instead.

French is a fun language! I still struggle with it even though I’ve been learning for 12 years now :sob: but it’s so rewarding! I’m a pretentious ass and learning French allowed me to watch old French films from when France was the centre of the film world without subtitles.

That’s why I wanna learn it! :sob: But I was focusing on improving my English first. And I think I know English enough to learn a new language now but it seems like the universe is conspiring against me!

Sanskrit seems so hard! They tried to teach me in Gujarati class, but it seems like hell. What made you wanna learn?

We had it in school for two years and I found it interesting. And it was one of the subjects i was really good at in school.

And i find that I love doing things i am good at. :joy:

I don’t blame you tbh. It’s not really used much now, though! Did you mostly do religious stuff?

Yes! I mean, I don’t believe in any religion but I still love reading religious texts and my grandmother had a lot of them when I was young. I don’t know where all of those are now though.

I’m learning French, too because I just moved to France and need it. Feel you on being shy until a few drinks in. Luckily wine is much cheaper her than the US and it’s more socially acceptable to start drinking at lunch!

Might start a French thread because I need all the help I can get and it’s less intimidating to speak to other learners too

That’s probably one of the best things about France, in my opinion! That and the amazing food!

That sounds like a good idea to me! I’d love to join in!

Italian sounds like such a cool language! I used to be great at French, but I haven’t spoken it really since I was 16, which was centuries ago! But @Kimballet speaks French! She has a thread where you can speak French!

@SenchaStories is never online (the turd) but she’s half French, too!
