@Bloggers, let’s look at writing characters with Autism and how to go about it

Remember that if you really enjoyed this blog, feel free to recommend it (it’s similar to liking it). This will help with it being higher in the results of search engines too.

okay ngl i wasn’t sure if i could speak up about this topic, since i’m not officially diagnosed (one of my psychs said i could be autistic one day, since i show most symptoms, but i’ve been bouncing from psych to psych for a long time now so yeah)

there’s so much to say about autism, it can’t really be condensed into a blog post, so i’d highly recommend anyone who wants to learn about it to talk to multiple autistic people about it
since autism is a spectrum, which means one person alone cannot tell you what autism is or isn’t, or how it’s perceived
also, if you wanna research on how symptoms show, i’d also heavily recommend you to read about ā€œmaskingā€ and how (often undiagnosed) autistic people tend to learn to hide their symptoms to pass as neurotypical, ofc it’s given a lot of different results tho

also, i’d like to add to what ouija said here:

In addition, there is a real issue with diagnosis rates between males and females.

i… wouldn’t really say ā€œbetween males and femalesā€ (not only bc it completely ignores the existence of us, people outside the binary) but because it’s between CIS males and… well everyone else
some amab people have the privilege of getting the diagnose as kids, of course, but well… from what i’ve read it’s mostly cis dudes
also, autism diagnoses have a very heavy bias towards white people
i won’t go into it too much bc well institutionalised racism is very much a thing and… it implies SO MUCH
but i wanna emphasise that autism is a white, cis boy diagnose
which leaves POC and afab (and some genderqueer) people… well undiagnosed and untreated

Bumpity bump bump!!

This is a well written piece.

I have Asperger’s/Autism and boy it angers me when people give me this ā€œyou don’t look autisticā€ or ā€œbut you’re sociableā€.
People only care if you’re an autistic male but dismiss you if you’re a female with autism. Autism has no gender!!!

I’m glad you like it! Yeah, it annoys me when people are like ā€œYou’re Autistic? You don’t look it!ā€

It’s so stupid!!!

Autism hasn’t got a look! It bothers me that people think we’re ā€œcircus freaksā€ just because we have interests that we are really fixed on i.e. I like dressing up as a cat and they would find that ā€œcringyā€ and call us ā€œpicky eatersā€.

When my brother gives me this ā€œhow can you not like cucumbers?ā€ I get defensive because he’s claiming that I’m a ā€œfreakā€ for not liking cucumbers. Even my dad annoys me, he tries lecturing me about how ā€œcucumbers are best for fat lossā€ and I obviously lost it with him because I hate cucumbers with a passion because it’s too watery. Yeah, I get you gotta eat your waters but not everyone likes cucumbers.

Cucumbers are gross. I for one, am obsessed with death and serial killers.

That’s cool.

But honestly, people sure love to get offended over things that are ā€˜cringy’. I put air quotes because I am imitating them!

Anyway, I recommend a book for women & girls with autism called Aspergirls. It is a well written book about autism & asperger’s in girls.

I’ve read Aspergirls.

This is so truw. I just got ā€˜officially’ diagnosed last week and it took me like half an hour to explain to the neurologist why I wanted to be a film director (an extremely social job)

Sorry! Should’ve mentioned the people who don’t identify as either gender.

Honestly, it absolutely annoys me!

I’m sure you can relate to this but do you ever have issues with sensory? I can’t stand to be around people at weddings because the loudness of people talking and interrogating me about when I’ll get married irritates me. Thank goodness I don’t attend these weddings but honestly, I hate them because of how horrible people are to me at weddings I’ve been to when I was younger.

It’s a very well written book about Asperger’s in women & girls. You’ll get a great insight on it!
