As Sunny led her brother to her room, she couldn’t help but notice that something was off about him. He didn’t seem like himself, even more than at Thanksgiving. Not that she would ever say this to his face but she almost preferred the full of himself version from that night to the man who was with her now. She would ask him what was up with him, but she had no confidence that he wouldn’t just brush it off. When they entered the room, Emiliano said that the room was unique, though Sunny wasn’t sure if he was being sarcastic or if it was a genuine compliment.
“Thanks, my boyfriend and I decorated it together.” She responded as she picked up her laptop and sat down on her bed. She didn’t stop to think about whether he knew about her relationship or not, assuming he had found out about it through the magical grapevine that was tabloid magazines. “You can take a seat. I don’t bite.” She teased while gesturing to the bed beside her, figuring it was better than him standing around awkwardly.
“What the f*ck?!” She exclaimed to herself as he began harshly coughing. She looked up from her laptop and watched him cautiously as if she were waiting for him to cough up blood. “Are you okay? Can I get you anything? Water, a lozenge maybe?” She asked him, wondering what was wrong with him. He asked what she wanted to show him which brought her out of her initial shock but she still harboured some concern for his condition. She cleared her throat, getting herself back on track as she pulled up the file.
“I wrote this after Mattias died. No one really knows it exists. I was waiting for you to come home.” She told him as the song started. She wanted him to be aware of the importance of her playing the song for him. The track was stripped down, just her and a keyboard, which added to the sombre lyrics, which alluded to her deceased brother becoming one of the thousand stars in the sky. Call it cliché but it comforted her to think about looking up at the night sky and seeing her brother among the stars. It made his death feel less final. As she listened, she found herself reaching for Emiliano’s hand. As if she needed to touch him to make sure he was real and this wasn’t some grand delusion her mind cooked up. When it finished, she watched her brother carefully for his reaction but certain that she wouldn’t respond nicely to negative comments about it.
