“What?” she shrieked, and yes, he jumped—though in a very manly way, of course. “I mean—you guys could… I don’t know, sit together…” He watched in horror and awe as she dissected the situation like a seasoned detective. Was it cold in the room, or was it just him? Sweat beads formed on his forehead as he shifted uncomfortably.
“Fine… but first…” Becks proclaimed with the drama of a headlining actress in a twist of fate. She sashayed in front of Shaun, her eyes twinkling as if she had just been crowned queen. she grabbed his chin with all the seriousness of a general preparing for battle. What is happening? Shaun thought, the question echoing inside his skull. Before he could process the imminent trouble, her lips crashed onto his. A kiss that felt like it might just single-handedly cause global warming.
He kissed her back, fully invested, his brain going whoa and his heart going let’s do this forever, not one thought occurred to him that he was maybe forgetting something important, like, per se the fact that they were most definitely not a couple, and his baby mama Josie was just sitting there, probably contemplating the meaning of life—or at least the meaning of Shaun’s face being squished against Beck’s lips.
Instead, his world dissolved. Suddenly, everything faded into a background of muted colors—his surroundings, all of it—just gone. All that existed was Beck and the sheer exuberance of her kiss, her tongue slipping in with the confidence of a diver diving into a pool for the first time. So this is what it’s like to be kissed by a tornado, he thought, grappling with the euphoric rush. His whole body reacting to her.
Then, just like that, it was over. She pulled away, leaving him gasping for breath as if he had run a marathon—or maybe just sprinted away from all his problems. “Have your talk,” she said, strutting out of the room like a supermodel who just saved the day. Because she had definitely saved his.
Shaun blinked. Talk? What talk? Who could think of talking after…that? Oh! He turned to Josie, who looked like someone who had just walked in on a magic trick that had gone horribly wrong. “Well, that was…something,” he said, attempting to regain his composure—or at least create the illusion of it. As he sputtered, Shaun noticed Josie’s expression shift to a blend of disbelief and something that might just be concern. Was he blushing? Was that sweat or was it a small lake forming under him? It felt like he was now in an episode of a reality show entitled “Shaun’s Totally Awkward Moments,” and there were no commercial breaks.
The awkward silence hung in the air like an unwanted extra guest at a party no one wanted to attend. Josie broke the silence, her voice tinged with irritation. “Okay what do you want to talk about Shaun. Yes I’m pregnant but I don’t need to sit down. I’m not that fat yet.” Her quip hung in the air, but the sincerity behind it made him wince.
“Well, um,” he began, running a hand through his hair and suddenly aware that he’d been doing that a lot today, “Congratulations, I guess? I mean, no, wait, not congratulations—more like, wow, life just threw us a curveball—uh, surprise? Also, I really didn’t see this coming despite my recent dive into romantic scenarios.” Am I you just going to ramble like this, or do I have a point. Right. Formulate a plan. Keep it together, Shaun. “Right. So, um, we… we should probably talk about this, like, seriously. I mean, you’re going to have a baby—wait, are you going to have our baby?” he asked anxiously. He stopped, glancing at Josie seriously. “In all seriousness, though. I have a lot of questions.”
