Josie let out a small squeak, and Shaun observed her, worry written all over his face. It caught him off guard, and he hesitated, unsure if he should offer her a comforting arm around her shoulders. Instead, he clasped his hands together. “Sorry, you just made me think of something really frightening.” She lowered her gaze, running a hand through her hair with a look of frustration. “I think it was when you mentioned our kids that hit me like oh god…” Josie’s voice faded away, causing Shaun’s stomach to sink.

Shaun took a deep breath, feeling a mix of hurt and confusion. “I get that it’s a big deal,” he said lightly, fighting to keep his voice steady. “But I thought we were on the same page about wanting…” He paused, searching for the right words, his heart racing. “I mean, I don’t want to push you into something you’re not ready for,” he added quickly, his stomach tightening. “But when you talk about it like that, it’s like… is this not something you see with me? Because it leaves me wondering.”

Shaun chuckled awkwardly, a wave of relief washing over him despite the tension lingering in the air. “Well, that’s good to hear, at least,” he said, scratching the back of his neck. “I mean, it’s nice knowing that you still have a roof over your head.” He forced a smile, trying to lighten the mood. “Not that I was worried about you being out on the streets or anything! Just, you know… concerned. I would have offered… still, yeah still will offer a place to stay. If you ever need it. Whenever.” He tried to sound nonchalant, but you could tell he cared. Tell he was nervous.

Shaun was taken aback, his eyebrows shooting up at the sudden shift in the conversation. He blinked, thrown off by the casualness with which she’d snapped his picture, the click of the camera echoing in his mind. “Wait, what? You just… took a picture of me?” he stammered, trying to wrap his head around the situation.

She nodded, her focus back on her phone as she tapped away, seeming completely unfazed. “I’m just going to show him that I’m talking to you right now. I don’t want anything about us coming out when I’m still trying to work on things with him. You know, just in case he hears about it…”

“Oh. Uh, okay,” he said slowly, nodding along, though his mind raced with a mix of surprise and curiosity. He felt slightly uneasy, but there was an odd comfort in her straightforwardness. It was almost like she was drawing a line—this was business, and she was keeping things clear.

When she finally looked at him again, her expression a blend of resolve and vulnerability, she adjusted her tank top and exhaled. “Do you want to talk to him? You can probably even do it now if you just text him,” she offered, holding out her phone as if it were a lifeline.

Shaun stared at the screen, heart thumping. He felt a strange mix of anticipation and hesitation. [Color=#0796b1] “I mean, if you think it’s a good idea.” He accepted the phone, fingers hovering over the screen as he considered his next move. This was uncharted territory, but he found himself nodding. “Sure, let’s see what he has to say. Do I…? Do I just text ‘hi I’m Shaun?’ Ah…I’m other Shaun?”
