I had the same reaction to this very sentence, then I remebered that in his nameplate a state was named and thought “Omg, he’s a southerner”
Do you think Tommy is a great choice for her because he’s like a father figure to her, and she needs that kind of love since her own father was loving and smart like that and since she lost him, she’s looking for somebody who’se nurturing like a father to a daughter (but doesn’t see her like a daughter) for a partner in life?

All my character lived in the USA at some point and most of them were born there
1/4 born outside of USA (Cyprus)
2/4 was born to parents who are USA citizens
1/4 born in USA to parents who are originally from somewhere else
1/4 lived in USA for a big chunk of their childhood (enough to do the process of naturalization if they wanted to but they didn’t)
