Shorts Series: The Scary Noises - 2039
Shay DeLoughrey was a big girl now, meaning that little things like rain didn’t… bother her anymore. Alright fine… FINE… maybe she was a little scared. With every creek of thunder, she found herself jumping, huddled under the confines of her blankets that her parents had tucked her into hours earlier. She had fallen asleep, though woken due to a loud jolt of lighting, and now found herself cowering in her sheets. Not to mention the dark shadows in her room… though Daddy had told her those were just trees and moonlight it looked like a hand reaching in… not to mention the fact that Shay had watched a scary movie at her friend’s house a few days earlier during a sleepover and so recently, every little thing was scaring her. BUT DON’T TELL HER MOM OR DAD. They don’t know that she watched a scary movie yet…
“Shay…” Shay jumped at the sound though soon found her little sister looking up at her with bright eyes. Zoe didn’t even say anything as another lightning struck and she immediately jumped into Shay’s bed, wrapping her arms around her sister and trembling. “I’m sca-wah-rd” she mumbled in her little voice. “I…tried to go to daddy’s room but I heard yelling and so I ran here sissy,” Shay tried to be brave for her sister, kissing the girl’s forehead as she casually said “It’s just rain Zoe. We’re both big girls it doesn’t scare us,” though the moment she said those words, another explosive thunder shook the room and she found herself hugging her sister tighter as well. In the movie she watched the other day, it was raining like this when the characters got hurt…badly… “Le…let’s just go to mommy and daddy just in case,”
Holding her 5-year-old sister’s hand, Shay and Zoe snuck back towards their parent’s room - but it seemed Zoe wasn’t wrong. There was yelling coming from her parents room - though muffled, Shay could hear it when she put her ear against the door. WHAT IF THE MEAN GUY FROM THE MOVIE HURT THEM. Shay didn’t want her parents hurt… no… Shay would save them herself. Taking a deep breath, she went on her tippy toes to reach the door handle and after a second of hesitation, Shay opened it screaming “I"LL SAVE YOU MOMMY” though, as the two girls walked in, ready to battle whatever beast was in the room, Shay found there was no one - but her mommy and daddy who looked shocked at their appearance. Shocked and hugging each other in a weird way… “Shay, Zoe… why aren’t you two asleep?” her mother was the first one to ask her a question as she moved back to her side of the bed, though that question didn’t need answering as there was a loud thunderous shake due to the rain, causing both girls to run closer to the bed - Shay towards her mother and Zoe towards her father’s side. Without saying anything, Shay jumped into her momma’s arms, wrapping them tightly around her. “Well I tried to sleep but the rain woke me up and I know you and daddy say that it’s just trees and shadows buttt it looked like Edward Scissorhands and so I couldn’t sleep and then Zoe came to my room saying that she heard noises in here and so I went to investigate because I’m a big girl now and I thought he was in here so I wanted to save you mommy,” she got out all in one breath, and after a few seconds, she heard her mom start to laugh, hugging her daughter tighter. “What did we say about scary movies love?” Jess asked, looking at her daughter who frowned. “I’m sorry mommy… Bonnie wanted to watch it and you always say that I’m a big girl now so I thought…”
“It’s okay my love, how about you do me a favor. Take Zoe and go back to your room and I’ll come in there and read a story okay?” After a few seconds, Shay nodded - grabbing her sister’s hand and walking back towards the door. However, at the last second, Shay turned with a slightly confused expression. “But… mommy… daddy what were those sounds?”
She saw her mom look over at her dad for a few seconds, “Me and your dad were talking babies, we couldn’t sleep either,”
With that, Shay nodded - walking back to her room with her little sister in tow - the two soon falling asleep hugging each other as their mom read them to sleep.
