If Kai was being honest, he did not want to be there at that ball whatsoever. There were many places he would have rather been, but it seemed as though he was in the right place at the right time. That’s where he came across a little girl sitting on the floor and crying, having lost her parents. To Kai, it didn’t matter that he was there as a prince with his own duties to attend to. What mattered was helping a lost little girl find her parents, so he sat down on the floor next to her, no matter what anyone else would think. He was trying his best to try and find out more about them to help, but she couldn’t give him much information on them. So, walking with her, carrying her where she could see the people around, he asked her questions, keeping her calm, and serving as a distraction so she wouldn’t be scared about not knowing where her parents were. “I am a prince. I know a lot of people, and some of them are princes and princesses too, but maybe I do know them. Can you tell me more about them? Maybe you can help me remember.” There was a chance Kai did know her parents, but there were so many people there, and they could be anywhere. “Hey, you liked your pretty dress, right? Do you remember what your momma’s dress looks like, so it’ll be easier to find her with all these people around?”

A Look Back to a Beginning

November 2002
The nurse had barely begun her shift when another newborn was brought into the NICU. Premature, small, and overall not in the best shape, not unlike the other infants she cared for on a daily basis, but for some reason she couldn’t explain she was drawn to that baby girl. It wasn’t that the baby didn’t have a family to care for her, she had seen many come in the same way, but even as her shift came to an end and she went home to her family, she couldn’t get that baby girl off of her mind.

Days went by, and the nurse watched the girl, with the odds against her, fighting to get stronger. After just a couple weeks she brought the idea on her mind up to her husband. “Oh honey, I know this is crazy, but you haven’t seen her. There’s just something about her. She doesn’t have anyone, but I’ve been taking care of her and she is a fighter. She’s struggling so much, but I can see it. She wants to take on the world, and I want us to be the ones to help her. I just know it, I know she’s supposed to be ours.” Soon enough, early into the new year, everything was official, they could bring their daughter home.

“Hey buddy, come here, there’s someone your mom and I want you to meet.”

The 10 year old walked into the room his parents were in, and it certainly wasn’t anything he would have expected, but little did he know that moment would become one of the most important moments of his life. His mom looked to the tiny baby in her arms, then to him with the soft, warm smile he knew as an instant comfort. “Kasper, meet Ketziah, your baby sister. You’re her big brother, so it’s always going to be your job to look out for her.

Standing in front of Jordan right now, Sadie wasn’t sure what she had been so worried about. Nervous to talk to him in person for years, and for what specific reason? Maybe she couldn’t bring herself to see the painful difference in their dynamic, the version of themselves that was holding back from each other. And she could see it, Sadie could see the change and it almost made her miss Jordan more than she had for the last four years, she missed the person that she could see he was, understandably, hesitating to show.

There was definitely more they could be talking about than the weather. After almost twenty years of knowing each other and they had resorted back to the climate: something that hadn’t come up in conversation even when they had just met. Thankfully, Jordan actually drew attention to it with a laugh, to which Sadie could feel some tension lifting. Shaking her head with a similar laugh, “I don’t know…” But she did know. Though that wasn’t exactly the conversation appropriate for a Work It reunion. Or, ever. “Yeah it’s really good to see y…-” But her words trailed off when she saw Jordan extending his arms. Was that… was he… was this a hug?

Confirmed: it was. How was it possible to find intimacy in this apprehension? Somehow they managed to. The space between them suddenly dissipated, her arms instinctively falling around his shoulders and her body drew closer to his, falling into perfect place as it had too long ago. It almost felt like an exhale, a sigh of relief. It was okay between them. A sense of familiarity came when they hugged, maybe there was awkwardness in conversation, but this would always be the same. For perhaps a little too long, she held onto him, as if doing so would make the past go away, and this would retreat back into normality.

She realised how much she didn’t want him to when Jordan drew away and then they were just back to talking, though it had started to come with ease. Though the conversation development was brought to a halt when a loud voice called towards them, reminding her that there were, in fact, other people here. “Liza, hey!” Sadie exclaimed as Liza practically jumped into the hug she gave her. It was one that was quick, and a lot less emotionally charged. Liza was probably the person she became closest to during and after the movie, and she helped her a lot getting through the divorce: which was probably why she felt obliged to step in when seeing them together.

Sadie’s eyes were already subconsciously following Jordan as he advanced into the room towards the bar and turned to her. “Uh, yeah, sure, thank you, just whatever you have out?” She replied while walking to the other side of the bar. “Is this new?” She asked to make conversation, looking down at it then back at him.

Shorts Series: She do be getting lost often - 2032

Her sadness dissipated in the company of the man who was helping her - one that she was tightly holding while putting her tongue out at the mean man behind them. Shay looked around, frowning when she still couldn’t see her parents anywhere. She could almost feel the beginnings of her tears start to form again - the worry that maybe her parents forgot about her, but was soon distracted when the man started talking about her - telling her that he was a prince. The idea made her excited and she couldn’t help but ask "Do yo…you… have a crown? My mommy and daddy don’t have a crown.

She thought about his next question - a sentiment of helping tell him more about her parents. "Ummm my mommy is really fun. I like playing with her and she reads to me every night. We ea…eat everything. Momma sneaks me sweets and tells me not to tell daddy and she’s really funny. There was a soft laugh that met her lips when she told the man about her mother. [/color] “She also has a funny voice, Umm daddy and I play all the time. He runs very fast but I’m faster than him,” she beamed, recalling when she beat him that morning.

Although she liked talking about her momma and papa, it made her sad when she wondered if she’d never find them. Though, she soon found the man asking her yet another question. “Mommy’s dress is veryyyy pretty. I wished I looked like mommy,” Shay frowned, stuffing her head in the man’s shoulder. “Mommy was wearing a longggg yellow dress like the sun. Daddy says mommy’s dress looks like sexii but I don’t know what that means. Do you know what that means?”

“What if I…I never find them” Shay asked in a tiny voice, but the moment she said that she saw her dad walking nearby and almost instantaneously screamed “Daddyyy” The scream caught her father’s attention as he turned at her voice - walking towards her. Shay wiggled as the man finally let her down and ran towards her dad hugging his legs. “Daddy this nice man helped me find you”

Dorian DeLoughrey
{ Dori being mean during date night | 2020 }

A date night… Not something Dorian liked spending his time on but if it gets him what he wanted in the end he couldn’t complain. So he found himself sitting with a girl, a cheerleader that was always around to be more specific, he knew almost nothing about in a comedy club. To make it worse he had to be the one to come up with what they’d be doing and Dorian… was never good at that. So going to places he was familiar with seemed like the safest and best option. Too bad he found out about all those places because of a person he once called his best friend - Jessica, who crossed his mind the moment he walked in. A that thought only made him annoyed, as it did for the past few years. Especially now when she was back in town. But did he let that ruin his mood? No, of course not. There was nothing that could ruin his mood while he was with a girl… or he thought so.

At one point he got up to get a drink for himself, ignoring everyone that was in front of him as he ordered the moment he got to the bar, only to have someone complain about it. He was face to face with the only person he didn’t want to see. At all. Instantly rolling his eyes at her first words, he tried to ignore the sound of her voice and just wait for his drink in peace but… you know how I said nothing could ruin this night for him? Well this surely did. ”Wow, suddenly you decide to be everywhere. I’d like it for you to stop following me.” A sarcastic smile growing on his lips as she started laughing, only making him more frustrated. Or were her words that made him frustrated?

”You should’ve just said no instead of giving me an explanation I didn’t ask for because…” leaning against the counter with his arms crossed, Dorian took a deep, sharp breath in before flashing her a charming smile. ”I don’t care. But you? On a date?” A chuckle escaped his lips as he let his gaze wander around the place, almost as if he was looking for that poor soul who decided to take Jessica on a date. A big applause for them. ”Let’s hope you don’t ditch them mid date and not pick up calls, huh? You have a way of doing that, don’t you?” Saying that quietly, his expression changed, being more serious as he looked back at her, meeting her eyes and not breaking that eye contact for a bit. ”At least you’re acknowledging my talents. H-" Dorian comment on her assumption, for a second forgetting the name of the girl he was with but very quickly covered it up with yet another petty comment. ”Hanna is fine. Being there with her is 16 times better than being here… at this very moment." Letting a smile form on his lips, he lifted his hand up, gently taking a strand of her hair and pushing it behind her ear before whispering, ”I think you should walk away."

Shorts Series: The one who wouldn’t let go - 2020

“SIMON no… no this shouldn’t be you. I’m so… I"m sorry” Jess cried with tears in her eyes as she wrapped her arms around the man bleeding out on the floor. It was her fault… she should be the one on that floor bleeding out if he hadn’t… jumped. And why? Because he loved her. Something she could never feel for him. She could see the way he looked at her, the way his hand brushed on her cheeks as she cried muttering “It’s okay…” . But it wasn’t. So she did the only thing she knew she could. She brought her lips down to meet his, kissing the man as he blead to his death. And then he was gone.

A gasp left her lips as her eyes shot open, her breathing increasing almost to hyperventilating as she re-lived that moment… not for the first time. She needed to get out of there… to walk… to… clear her head. Jess looked around the unfamiliar dark room. Though it took a few seconds to realize she was lying in Kai’s bed - the man asleep peacefully next to her. Sitting up, Jess sighed. This wasn’t the first time Jess had been sleeping over… it had been about a week since they first… well… finally did the deed. But it was the first time she had a nightmare with him near her. Laying back down for a moment, Jess placed a small kiss on Kai’s head and was about to roll over and leave, however, she soon found his arms tightly wrapped around her. fck As much as she wanted to take a walk, Jess also didn’t want to wake the man up. That didn’t mean she didn’t attempt.

At first, Jess started off carefully trying to move his hands. A simple push here, a wiggle there - but nothing. His grip was bloody iron-clad. Then she really got into it. Jess tried to pull his fingers apart with all the force she could muster but it was useless. She even tried to use her teeth… that… didn’t go well. Was he just a bloody deep sleeper or something? God. She spent about forty minutes doing that. Attempting to escape but, as she soon realized, it was useless and he was STILL asleep. A sigh left her lips as she wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing his lips. “I don’t know how you bloody do it when you’re asleep but fine. I’ll stay right here,” Jess whispered, moving her lips to his neck - really to just see if he was awake. But after no movement she gave up, keeping her arms wrapped around him as she closed her eyes and fell asleep in the comfort of his arms for the first, but not the last time in their relationship.

It’s okay. But is it every okay? Would he ever be okay. Sadie might have forgiven him, but after 20 years, Elodie didn’t forgive him and… god Riker didn’t even know what he did. But he would forever say sorry for it because Elodie was… and would be the love of his life. He loved her… through thick and thin. His wedding vows said it all and he truly believed that he would be with her through sickness and in health but then… what happened? What had been going on these past couple of weeks? Why…

Riker watched as Sadie took his bottle away from him and sighed, stuffing his face in his hands before simply moving his head to her lap. “You didn’t deserve what happened to you either,” Riker mumbled, closing his eyes against her as his mind raced. It was true - with everything Sadie and Jordan had been through and how amazing Sadie was - between the two of them - she should have been the one to have her happy ever after. And now here both of them were. Two broken fairytales together in one room. “Thank you Sadie… I think… I’m just going to… close my eyes,” Riker stated, tears falling from his eyes to her lap as he said the words.

“Hey”

Jordan didn’t know what happened, but by the way she looked - he knew it wasn’t good. Without wasting a second, Jordan walked inside and pulled her into a tight hug, letting his hand brush her hair. “No you don’t… I… I’m sorry Jezebel. I should have never been here in the first place and you were just… helping me in a tough spot you don’t deserve any of that… I can talk to your mother once she’s calmed down and tell her what happened… you don’t… it’s not on you.” Jordan fumbled over his words but they were some that he truly believed. Moving away from the hug, he cupped her face, wiping her tears. "Are you… okay? What did she say to you? Jordan asked. Part of him felt like he should leave… to make sure she didn’t get into trouble again by being near her but Jordan was drawn to Jezebel and seeing her cry just… it was instinctive to want to protect her. To hold her until she felt better.

Over the past few days, Jezebel had become more than a simple crush. He honestly considered her a good friend and if nothing ever happened between them besides a friendship… Jordan would be happy with that becuase at least he got to be in her life in some way. “I don’t… want to get you into more trouble. I can leave right now if you want me to?”

Summer 2039
Xavier rest his head on the ground as he lay down in the grass beside his boyfriend, Tyler. Summer was definitely not his favourite season, not because of the weather, he actually enjoyed the heat, it was because he always has people looking at him funny because he goes out in thirty degree weather wearing long-sleeved shirts.

Xavier looked over at Tyler and smiled. It was the summer before their senior year and the two of them were out at a local park on a date. “This is really nice.” He said, thinking out loud and looking up at the sky. “Can you believe that we’re going to be seniors in a couple of weeks?” He asked, not entirely sure he believed it himself. Four years suddenly felt like such a short time.

The summer had passed quickly, with Xavier spending most of his time at his soccer club, either coaching younger teams (his parents’ idea, not his) or training and playing with his own team. Any time he didn’t spend at the soccer club was spilt between helping his parents in their bakery and spending time with his boyfriend.

Tyler turned his head to look at his boyfriend, bodies stretched out I the grass. “Yeah. It’s crazy…it feels like just yesterday I was walking into Cerulean as a Freshman. Now look at us. We’re Seniors now. Four years went by so fast.” He said, entwining his fingers with Xavier’s. He’d spent the summer hanging with his twin sister Mia, surfing, helping his mom at the clinic and hanging with Xavier.

Shorts Series: Date Night Annoyance - 2020

Have you ever met someone that was so bloody infuriating that you wanted to murder them right where they stood that very second? Like fully incinerate them and have them burst into flames? No? Not even a little bit? Well…let me introduce you to Dorian DeLoughrey - resident arse of a place called Cerulean high, second only, to Jessica Pierce’s head. It was strange to think that only four years earlier, the two couldn’t do anything without one another. From going to movies, to water parks, to comedy clubs - they were truly each other’s best friends - in every sense of the word. Hell - boundaries weren’t a thing between them. More than once, Jess found herself cuddled against the man watching some horror movie on a random Wednesday evening as he complained that she was eating all the popcorn. However, the man that stood in front of her now… the one she was looking at was the furthest thing from her friend. Perhaps that person had died four years ago, but it still hurt to hear his words. Though, she’d never show him that. To him… and the rest of the world - Jessica Pierce was a cold-hearted btch who left with no explanation simply for the fun of it. Honestly - if anyone should have been able to figure out that there was more to the story of her disappearance, it should have been Dorian. It should have been her best friend, but no. It seemed Dorian was the first one to push her away. Should she be surprised? Maybe not.

”Wow, suddenly you decide to be everywhere. I’d like it for you to stop following me.”

A sarcastic scoff left her lips as she crossed her arms across her chest. “Oh get the fck over yourself Dorian. The world doesn’t revolve around you. I know it’s hard to conceptualize that, but for fcks sake.” Jess stated with utter frustration. God the amount she wanted to slap that smile off his face - she’d pay good money for it. Hell, she’d give someone her inheritance for it. Jess couldn’t help but roll her eyes at his sentiment of not caring. Though there was an irony in him saying he didn’t care and then taunting her about the date. "Oh you know me so bloody well Dorian. See usually I may consider it but I actually like this fellow, so I’ll lean towards flirting and possibly sleeping with him instead. And really? You’re one to talk about picking up phone calls… you know what. It doesn’t even matter, She muttered - the last comment hitting home with the memory of the call she had done the night she left. Really all it would have taken that night was one word from him. But maybe it was on her too for never giving him a chance. In either case, neither would ever know.

Jess turned back towards the bartender as the man brought over Dorian’s drink, though, instead of letting the man pick it up, Jess grabbed it before he could. With that, she raised it up at him and chugged it within a few seconds without flinching, and then putting it back down. Guess drowning her sorrows in alcohol over the past four years helps with reducing her gag reflex with drinks. She gave the bartender a look, making a motion that she wanted another one before turning back towards the arse who said something about rather being with his date. "You know - it’s funny. You act like I’m keeping you against your will over here by the bar. Please do go back to your cheerleader. I’m sure she’s so worried about you while she’s texting her friends and checking Instagram every 3.5 seconds. I have to ask - how much do you want to bet she’s having more fun talking to her friends about being on a date with you than actually being on this date with you? Jess asked. There was another sentiment in the bet she mentioned. Often as children… as friend the two would make bets. Many bets… random bets. The winner getting a favor from the other - with certain rules attached. But simply stating it hit a bit too close to him for her as well… though she wouldn’t ever let him know that. In any case, she had, indeed, perfected the art of putting up a strong front.

Though, her smile dropped when she felt herself trapped against the bar and his body for the second time… or… are we counting the dream? Make it the third time she’s been trapped against something by the man. For a second, Jess’ mind flashed back to the dream - his body on top of her’s as he… no, no, no, no, NO we’re not thinking about that right now JEss…:triumph:.

Bringing herself out of her thoughts, Jess listened to his voice as he told her to walk away and could feel herself getting frustrated. No… actually, she was past frustrated. Jessica Pierce was officially p!ssed. “Dorian…” Jess started off sweetly, putting her hand on his chest gently. "…fcking touch me one more time, and you won’t have a hand to touch me with. And I’m guessing you’re going to need that hand while you’re jerking yourself off since I can’t imagine any sane person wants to sleep with you." With that she took a soft breath before letting her lips near his ear. “Though I guess that doesn’t say much about your taste in dates.”

That being said, she pushed him off of her, taking the drink that the bartender refilled and gave him a look. “but you know what… I will walk away,” . And she did. After giving him one last look, Jess did exactly what she said. She walked away - all the way to the stage, whispering in the manager’s ear and smiling as the microphone was given to her between sets of actual paid artists. Perks of knowing the manager apparently.

“Well hello everyone…” Jess smiled, watching as everyone started clapping and she put her hand up to stop them. “… trust me. My act isn’t that good that you guys have to clap. Really it’s just more of a little storytime but I’m all about audience participation and interaction so please - I would love to get your input everyone. So first of all, I have to ask, how many of you have graduated high school?”

Jess waited as most of the audience put their hand up and nodded with a slight laugh. "God high school… honestly… people say it should be the best years of your life but bloody actually believes that?

Jess waited and smiled as no one in the room raised their hand.

"Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so. But let’s be honest - what is high school besides a little popularity contest? A time where the jocks and cheerleaders shine and think they’re on top of the bloody world and do so by putting everyone else down?

Jess heard someone scream PREACH SISTER and laughed alongside the audience. “SEE they get it. And honestly - I could spend all night up here making assh0le jock jokes… honestly, it’s really too damn easy but I’m here to turn things to a slightly more serious note. Anyways here’s my story, and please - let me know if you’ve gone through this too. So once upon a time I actually used to be friends with that person. You know - that jock that everyone likes. Or at least, pretends to like for affiliate popularity. But here’s the thing - I was never doing it for that. Not like the cheerleaders who spent all their time with him posting on Instagram or whatnot. I didn’t care about who he was to everyone else. Because to me, he was… different. An actual friend, you know? Someone I could tell everything to… do everything with. And I know that’s hard to believe - after all - who would have imagined jocks have anything on their mind besides hitting a ball and screwing girls but I thought it was different. Well, let me tell you folks. It’s not. I guess stereotypes exist for a reason because the moment things didn’t turn out the way he hoped - he turned back into that same bloody stereotype everyone else thought he was. Guess that’s 5 years wasted huh?”

Taking a deep breath, Jess met Dorian’s eyes from across the room. "I’m not here to gain your pity or anything of the matter. I just wanted to let… ALL of you know that sometimes, maybe reading a book by its cover isn’t wrong. Because at the end of the day, no matter what happened inside the book - you put it back on the shelf and that’s all that remains. The cover… that, by itself, has just a glimpse of what was inside. But a glimpse that was probably the most accurate description. I… sigh Apologies for my little rant everyone. Enjoy the rest of your evening and the next act.

With that, Jess handed the mic off to the next act, smiling as the woman patted her on the back muttering that she knew what Jess was going through and that she should see her after the show to talk. With a nod, Jess walked back to her date with a smile. "What do you say we get out of here and go take a little walk? . Perhaps she didn’t want to be in the same room as Dorian anymore because the truth of the matter was - it seemed all he ever did was hurt her.

Some people say that when you see you ex again… especially when that ex used to be your wife, you could cut the tension in any room with a knife. But here’s the thing - despite it being years since the two casually hung out like this… it wasn’t like that. Honestly, Jordan never wanted it to be like that. He always had too much… respect towards the girl. Respect and love if we were being specific but maybe a different kind of love? Or maybe Jordan had formed it into a “different” kind of love so that it would hurt him less. In either case - here they were. Two people who were once so in love in the same room and it wasn’t… awkward? At least… maybe.

In any case, Jordan found himself navigating towards the bar and nodding with a small smile as she told him to whip up whatever he had out. In retrospect, the answer to that was - a lot. Over the years, Jordan had been gifted various expensive wines, scotches, etc through his roles or jobs. But since Jordan didn’t drink - it ended up just being donated or ending up here - in his bar meant for guests. Though, after 5 years of marriage, Jordan knew what Sadie liked.

Overall, Sadie hadn’t been a big drinker in general. However, whereas Jordan didn’t drink at all - Sadie would take a few drinks here or there depending on the occasion and Jordan could still remember the bottle of wine she said was her favorite as they were preparing for… well… their wedding and what would be served. Alcohol was the on part of the evening that Jordan didn’t have say in so he let Sadie decide and the bottle in his hand was the one she had liked. Since their wedding, the bottle they served had diminished with only a few left in the world with this year and that specific vineyard and Jordan had actually managed to acquire the last three bottles… perhaps for sentiments sake more than anything else. And if he couldn’t drink it - he knew the person he wanted it for. Pouring the bottle, Jordan handed the girl the glass with a soft smile as she asked if the bar was new.

“It is actually. I had it built after the grammies last year when I was gifted another Melot. I feel like after about more than 2 decades in the spotlight, people would have heard my interviews about not drinking but I still end up with a stray bottle or two and I wanted something to do with the ones I couldn’t donate to charity auctions - so, here we are,”

After a second, Jordan watched her taking a sip of the drink, her eyes twinkling in recognition as she started to say something - however, Jordan answered the question before she finished it. "Yeah… it is. he replied without any prompting from the girl. It was something they… and maybe all couples… learned how to do. To speak without actually speaking - and even if they weren’t together anymore, Jordan (in a way) still knew how to communicate with her with simple starts of sentences or even odd looks during a speech or ceremony.

Perhaps he would have stayed there forever if he could but he soon found one of the other actors calling both of them over to the theatre in his house - screaming that she was going to start the movie in one minute whether they were there or not. Motioning towards the room, Jordan grabbed some popcorn and walked inside with her - taking a seat…in the only few seats available which happened to place Jordan and Sadie next to one another as the familiar movie started playing - a smile he couldn’t control as he saw a younger Sadie on the screen pretending like she couldn’t dance.

"How was it, by the way? Acting like you were terrible at all of that when you were clearly amazing?

Jezebel Mallory Sloane

Jezebel was still upset about everything with her mom, but when Jordan came inside and pulled her into a tight hug, there was an instantly comforting feeling. “I’m sorry you can’t stay anymore… and its not your fault, I brought you here. It was my choice.” Even when she brought Jordan there in the first place, she knew how her family would react, and she knew that Jordan talking to her mother wouldn’t make a difference. Jezebel looked at Jordan as he wiped her tears and gave a small nod when he asked if she was alright. “I’m fine, my mom… she’s a lot sometimes… She mostly said if I’m not careful and make mistakes I’ll lose any chance to make something of my future.” Of course, that wasn’t how her mother said it to her, but it was one of her mother’s points. Even if Jordan saw a little bit of how the dynamic was with her mother, Jezebel still tried to not share all of it. She knew Jordan shouldn’t stay, but in the time he had been staying there, they had grown closer, and him being there made her feel better, so she shook her head when he said he could leave right then. “No, don’t go. Stay a little longer at least.”

The most she had ever seen or heard of Jordan in this time was through brief mentions from their kids, or Riker, and due to their fans tagging her in all of them, every single one of his Instagram posts. It was fair to say that their relationship had completely dominated her social media. Which… Sadie probably would have looked his posts either way, of course listening to the new songs he had been releasing in the last five years maybe more than a few times. Though somehow now in real life after only seeing him through a screen, it felt no different to how it did five, ten, twenty years ago. To her, at least.

Her hands broke away from holding onto each other as Jordan handed her the wine glass, a brief contact between their hands as it switched from being in his to hers. “Thank you,” She said quietly with a smile before he started talking about the origin of the bar. As his explanation came to a close, Sadie brought the drink up and took a sip, recognition hitting almost immediately, and she was at the day she last drank the same wine. The ethereal atmosphere, their friends and family attending but her eyes that were only on one person the entire time. A happiness and love that would last forever.

Then she remembered where she was, Jordan looking at her, with subtle expectancy. “Is this…-?” But Jordan had already answered the question. “How- how did you- where- why did you-?” Nope, no, no, no, it didn’t have to mean anything, this didn’t have to be a thing, it’s not a big deal. But that was… that was the one, the one that she thought didn’t even exist anymore, but one that was now in his house. Five years later. Not that it had to mean anything. But maybe she was still allowed to feel… the feelings she had for it. And she didn’t even have to say anything, Sadie just looked at him, allowing the unspoken words to fall into place as they so effortlessly did.

However a call from the theatre room brought her back to earth, Liza shouting for Jordan and Sadie to tell them they are starting the movie. Their movie. Not only would they be watching the off and on-screen romance between them captured in an hour and a half in the form of Work It, but they were also sitting next to each other at the back of the room to do so. As she took a seat next to him, Sadie gave him a kind of smile that acknowledged the awkwardness they would probably be about to endure.

There was a painfully-identifiable feeling that rushed through her as she watched a younger Jordan and Sadie together, that seemed like a lifetime ago, but somehow like had been no time at all too. Sadie watched the romantically-charged interactions between their characters, while passing secret glances towards Jordan to get hints on what he may be thinking. Looking away before he had an opportunity to see, until a dance scene began, and a look in his direction had been reciprocated with a question from real-life Jordan to her.

“What? I- no it- no, that acting definitely- it was not far from reality at the time,” Sadie said through a nervous laugh, an uncontrollable smile, that passed throughout her whole answer. “And the ‘good’ parts… the power of amazing directing is…- yeah that was- that’s all that was.” She continued, finding it difficult to make eye contact without feeling too many things. After a few more lines of dialogue from the movie passed, Sadie actually did a full turn towards him, one leg up on her seat. “I- thank you, for what you said in that Work It interview,” Sadie said, “It should have definitely have been the first thing I said when I walked in here but it- yeah… thank you.”

“They really did.” He agreed with him, a smile appearing on his face as he remembered a conversation he had with his parents in the bakery a few days ago. “You should have seen my mom’s face the other day when she realized that I’m less than half a year away from being an adult.”. He said with a small laugh.

“Hey Tyler, what are planning on doing once you graduate?” He asked, thinking about how this time next year, they would be preparing for university, college, or whatever else came next for them. He’d given it some thought in the past, but now that it was nearing closer, he realized that he would have to make his decision sooner rather than later.

Tyler chuckled at the idea of his mom’s face. “Ah, I can imagine.” He said, making a face of feigned shock, before laughing. “I’ll probably follow after my dad. Surfing and all that. You really should try it. I can help you. It’d also be awesome to help Mia with whatever she decides to do. Probably veterinary work. That girl’s crazy about animals. What about you?”

Shorts Series: A series of unfortunate events

Dorian DeLoughrey. Was it bad that Jessica was anxious for their date? In retrospect - a date was a date. It was just a day, another moment to get to know someone better. But here’s the thing - Jessica knew Dorian. She knew his ins and outs. What he liked, what he didn’t. Okay… well mostly knew him. There had been those four years and they did have a little bit of catching up to do but in retrospect, she did know a lot about Dorian. They say that dating someone you consider your best friend can be the best… or worst choice you ever make. So was this that? Was it a mistake or was it… the best choice she could make. Fck.

Honestly, Jessica Pierce didn’t know the answer to that. All she knew was that she was laying on a hospital bed, thinking… . maybe overthinking about something her and Dori talked about. A date. Well maybe she strong-armed him into asking her out over text message but in either case, he said he would. And she had no idea what that meant. One of the reasons being HE HADN’T TOLD HER.

For the last few days, Dorian had been visiting her. Well… since she woke up he’s been visiting. Jess could still remember the intense pain that filled her body as her eyes opened - finding herself in the room with a worried Daniel and Jezebel right beside her. More than the pain that accompanied being… well… alive was the pain she felt for Jezebel’s baby. But there were a few people who made the pain feel better - Dorian being one of them who visited her the moment he could. It was weird though… for the longest time she had never seen Dorian in real pain. Honestly, perhaps it was because he was good at hiding it but the day he visited her and wrapped his arms around her muttering “thank god” was different. It didn’t matter how many I’m invincible jokes Jess made - there was still a somber tone in the room that took a few days to get past. Then there was the wedding that Jess wasn’t supposed to go to and got more… hurt and he wasn’t very happy about that either. Though, in retrospect, neither was Dan… nor Jezebel… nor anyone else she knew who understood she should have been on bed rest.

In any case - here she was. Still in the wretched hospital, however, with the help of Jezebel - ready for the said date. Something Jez had told her was a welcome distraction from the worry about her baby. The one thing she hated was the fact that she was once again wheelchair-bound. All the strength that she had garnered before the wedding disappeared with her additional injury and now she was once again starting from the beginning meaning she couldn’t muster up the strength to walk more than a few minutes before collapsing. So things she usually would do on a date she couldn’t.

Though any worry she had fallen away when she saw the man entering the room and she smiled at him cheekily. “So I see you have no food in your hand which is an automatic strike in the bad dates column,” Jess joked as he leaned in to hug her, retorting to her sentiment. Though as he leaned in, both of them hit their heads against one another - causing an “Owwww” to leave Jess’ lips with a laugh as she nursed her forehead and he did the same. "Well the date can only go up from here huh? . Despite the weird start, the two continued in their retorts. It was the back and forth that Jess always loved about him - the fact that they could talk and joke for hours without ever getting tired. He made a statement about her still not being able to walk and she threw her tongue out at him. Was this it? The happiness that everyone was constantly searching for? Because honestly, Jess did feel those butterflies in her stomach that she had heard in all those stories when she was younger. That she had only felt maybe once before.

Okay… so it was… interesting so far. If the world was trying to throw them signs that this wasn’t what they were supposed to be doing - it was bloody working. Everything that could go wrong on their first date was going wrong. And listen - Jessica Pierce was not someone to believe in fate but this was just… yeah. First of all… it was just… awkward. Was it her? Was it him? Who the hell knew - all she knew was that it was… strange. The conversation wasn’t flowing as it had a few hours ago… hell as it had a few days ago. And that was just the start of it. Maybe it was the pressure. The hope that this date would be… perfect. Who knows… all Jessica Pierce knew was this wasn’t… what she had expected.

First, as Dorian was wheeling Jess out of the hospital, her wheelchair had gotten badly trapped in a crack in the cement outside the hospital… and there was a need of getting Dorian, and two other guys to actually pull that wheel before it got out. Which really… well it kind of went like this.

“Hey maybe we should ask those guys to help?”

“No it’s… I got it Jess”

“You sure… that looks mighty… trapped in there, love.”

“Just… trust me okay?”

~20 minutes later~

After 20 minutes, Jess just gave up on it coming out and screamed at the top of her lungs for the guys sitting on the bench to help which easily got Dorian frustrated and what resulted was Jess on the floor with a small scrape on her hand from the fall as the wheelchair went up a little too fast and tumbled her out. Yep… you see what I mean. There was a strange expression on Dorian’s features as one of the men that had helped them immediately went to help Jess up and back on the chair - a bright smile on her own lips as she thanked them, brushing the bloody cut off. There was an uncaring expression on her face as she told Dorian it was okay and that she was fine.

But it really seemed as if that was just the start because the moment Jess was settled in Dorian’s car… well… it wouldn’t start. Curses emitted from Dorian’s lips as he tried a few times before going to the hood and looking at something under there. Usually, Jess would come out and give some unhelpful, yet, hilarious commentary while pointing at random things and saying that perhaps that was the issue - but with her current situation, she was stuck in the front seat. Since the window wouldn’t roll down, Jess opened the front door - asking if everything was okay. The answer? Kind of? After a one-hour wait with him on the phone for most of that time with Geico to send some roadside assistance, it seemed his battery was dead and needed a jump. Though soon enough, he was back in the car, and Jess could see he was trying to calm his frustration. “Hey… it’s okay love” Jess whispered, placing her hand on top of his with a soft smile. “I’m just excited to see what you have planned” she smiled genuinely, her smile growing when she saw his eyes soften.

That had to be it right? The worst of it. And for a few moments, Jess thought it was. Dorian brought her to a McDonalds, a grin on his lips as told her to choose one thing from the menu. She obviously gave him an incredulous look - jokingly arguing for a few seconds about how in the WORLD she could narrow her options down to one thing before sighing in defeat. Though, her first choice seemed to be “out” as the person through the drive-through told them that the ice cream machine was broken and that they had a shipment delay on nuggets. Really all they had were a few items on the menu. At the next fast-food drive-in, the two got stuck in the drive-through for 40 minutes when someone in front of them popped a tire and couldn’t move - holding the lineup. And at the one after that, their fire alarms came on and all the employees had to exit the building meaning Jess and Dorian didn’t get the food they ordered for some time after that. And this continued - at almost every single place they went to. From getting wrong orders to getting overcharged - things just kept going wrong.

Though Jess kept her cool, keeping a bubbly attitude. Though Jess could tell that Dorian was getting more and more frustrated as the day went on - up until the moment they were at a lake that they used to go to as children. Supposedly the whole thing about ordering one item from the menu was for a picnic which Jess… well she honestly thought it was adorable. Coming over to her side, Dorian carried her to a blanket he had set… or a blanket he had set until it flew away due to the wind. Jess laughed as she sat on the dirt, watching him run after the blanket - though giving up after a few moments as he went back to the car and brought the food they had gotten.

For a few moments after that, things did seem to calm down. The two eating and talking - though the obvious frustration in Dorian made most conversations fall away… which meant… well… jess just talked about random things. Talking about things she did in London during the 4 years she was away, telling jokes to lighten the mood. And it almost seemed as if it was working for a while… up until… well it started raining. And not just a little rain… a thundering rain that almost immediately started pouring out of nowhere - drenching what food they had gotten and rendered them unedible immediately.

It was then that she saw Dorian just… well, get up and kick the ground. "What the fck is going on, you have to be fcking kidding me. Jess could see he was annoyed and maybe she was too - because on the ranking of worst dates - this was up there. But…

With a sigh, Jess struggled to push herself up as he stared away from her - the rain still pouring down on them. It was difficult, but after a few moments - she had done it. Wobbling over to him and wrapping her arms around his back for support the moment she had gotten over to him. “Soooo…” Jess started, turning her head towards him as she laid it on his shoulder.

"It wasn’t… he started, taking a deep breath under the rain. “… this was supposed to be perfect… it just”

“Dorian…” Jess whispered, struggling to walk so she was in front of him. She found his hands going to her waist for support, and she moved her hand to his cheek. “It never had to be perfect… maybe that was the problem… we just… were looking for something that it was never going to be. All I wanted was to be with you Dorian and that’s what we were.”

He started to say something and Jess shook her head. “Give me your phone idiot,” Jess muttered - taking it as he handed it to her and she put a song on. “Dance with me,” she whispered, holding on to him tightly with her arms so she wouldn’t fall. He was confused, and perhaps he usually would have put up an argument - but it seemed as if the day had worn him out and he agreed. After a few minutes of slowly moving in the rain, Jess talked to him. Mentioning the fact that rain had always brought them luck before… and a mention of her trying to jump out of his window which brought laughter to both their lips. “Wow DeLoughrey, you got better since that ball I dragged you to” Jess stated cheekily, “Wayyyy less stepping on my feet this time,” she joked which brought him to retort. This was it… what she was hoping for from the beginning. As the song ended, it seemed the rain had passed and the two were in the middle of an empty lake. Dorian was about to say something though before he could get it out, the wind had moved an object and it brushed against Dorian’s leg. The item being a seemingly wet blanket that they had lost earlier. Irony huh? After a few seconds, Dorian laid it out and helped Jess onto it before taking a seat next to her.

“Hey,” Jess muttered after a few seconds of them sitting, smiling as he turned towards her. “This was perfect” she continued, before bringing her lips to his and spending the next few hours lost in each other’s lips - needing nothing else but one another.

Shorts Series: Not a happy daughter - 2035

Shay waited patiently and quietly, her backpack around her shoulders as she stood outside with a few of her classmates and her teacher as their parents slowly came to pick their kids up after a loonggggg day of school. Okay… mostly patiently. And… fineeeee not at all quietly. She liked to talk - what could she say? She was talking to her friend Ashely about how she was having a birthday party next weekend and she wanted Shay to come. “Ohhhhh yessss.” Shay gleefully exclaimed. Though after a few moments, she saw her friend looking over her shoulder. “I think Miss. Robins likes your dad,” the girl mentioned - pointing towards where Shay’s father had come out of his car and was talking to her teacher. Shay watched as Miss. Robins twirled her hair and put her hand on her dad’s shoulder. The two looked like they were laughing, and shay frowned. “No… my daddy is with my mommy,” Shay muttered sadly though the girl in small excitement - not truly understanding the consequences of her actions - started singing "Miss Robinsss and Shay’sss dad sitting in a tree…

Shay was clearly upset by the implication that her teacher could… like her dad and found herself moving towards her father immediately. Looking up at him, she pulled his pant leg. "Can we goooo dad? Mommy promised me ice cream while I showed her my drawing. As she mentioned her mom, she looked at her teacher before pulling her dad’s arm towards his car - to which he told Miss. Robbin “bye” and helped her into her car seat.

It seemed that was only the start. The next day, all of her friends started teasing her about Miss Robins being her mom soon - the ‘sitting in the tree’ song being sung by everyone when Miss Robins wasn’t around. But she didn’t want a new mom… she loved her mom and the idea only made her more upset. It happened again. Her father picked her up and Miss. Robbins started twirling her hair and touching her dad and Shay immediately pulled him away. Perhaps he knew she was upset because in the car after the third day of doing the same thing he asked her what was wrong and she refused to talk. Instead, the minute they got home, Shay ran inside, wrapping her little arms around her mom immediately with the words “I love you, mommy,”

That night, Shay had a bad dream. She had woken up in the morning and made her way downstairs to a delicious smell of pancakes. Rubbing her tired eyes, Shay saw a woman by the stove. Naturally, Shay muttered “Good morning mommy” but as the women turned, it wasn’t her mom. Her heart started racing as she saw Miss Robins turning towards her with a smile. “Good Morning honey. Do you want chocolate chip or blueberry?” Shay started walking away backward in shock, scared. Where was her mom? Her breathing increased as she felt her little body trip over someone’s feet. Immediately, she saw her dad bending down looking worried asking if she was okay. “Where…where’s mommy?” Shay asked in a small voice and her dad looked confused. "What do you mean sweetheart? She’s making breakfast. With that, Shay couldn’t hold back her tears - especially as Miss Robins came towards her with a plate of food.

Abruptly, Shay awoke from her dream - crying as she had in her dream. With her tears, Shay made her way towards her parent’s room, opening the door and crying as she went inside towards her mom’s side. Her mom immediately woke up, looking confused but immediately pulling her daughter up and into her arms. Shay wrapped her arms around her mom as she cried more, the feeling of her mom hugging her tightly helping her calm down but the memory of her dream worrying her. It was strange… every time Shay had a bad dream she couldn’t forget it. It was like it was in the back of her mind. Every time she thought of it, the feelings returned as intently as they had the first time. Her mom once told her that it was the way her special mind worked but Shay didn’t like it. She didn’t fall back asleep that night until her mother started singing a song, and slowly, she was lulled back to sleep in her mom’s arms. She heard whispered talking between her mom and dad but she was… too tired to stay awake.

Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to kick her teacher and tell her that she didn’t like her? Well… SHE DIDN’T. Maybe it was even a worse idea to do this in front of everyone. And now… Shay was sitting alone in Miss Robins’s office as she waited for her mom to come and talk to her. Or…at least… it was supposed to be her mom. There was a frown on her face with her arms crossed over her chest - Miss Robins looking disapprovingly at her as she lectured her on lady-like student behavior. Haring the door open, a smile met her facing thinking it would be her mom but instead, her dad came through her door and her frown deepened. “My mommy was supposed to be here…” she mumbled sadly as her dad took a seat on the chair next to her and talked to her teacher who moved out of her seat to stand near her dad. She listened as her dad turned towards her, trying to meet her eyes as he asked why she did that - and once again, Shay could feel her eyes brimming with tears. “Be…because I do…don’t wan…want… Miss. Robins…to…to be my mom…mommy,” Shay cried, holding her little legs to her chest as she cried more. “I wan… I want my mommy” she continued.

Seeing Jezebel cry… was… breaking him inside. Jordan had been hurt many times but he never… NEVER… wanted that to ever happen to Jezebel. He never wanted Jezebel to be hurt because of his actions and he just… he didn’t know what to do but hug her. He shook his head at her apology, “Don’t ever be sorry because of that… I just… I don’t even know how to tell you how much I appreciated your kindness and you don’t… you did more than I could ever thank you for Jez. I’m just… I’m sorry about you getting into trouble. I’ll tell your mom anything to make this better I just…” He started, though she cut him off with her next sentiment about being fine. In any case, he still felt awful. Awful that she was crying… that it was his fault and he didn’t know what to do to help her… and he wanted to…help her that is.

When he told her he would leave - he meant it. He didn’t want her to get in trouble for anything else… he had hurt her so much already and… he never wanted that. But he stilled as she asked him to stay longer. “No I just… I couldn’t ask for more than you’ve already done Jez…” Though the words left his mouth, he could see the instant that her face fell at his words. "I should… probably find a place to sleep… but don’t…please don’t blame yourself Jez… I just… don’t want to get you in more trouble. He felt awful, and with those words he pulled her in once again. "No matter what your mom says… you are the strongest person I know and no matter what happens, I know your future is bright, he whispered, giving her a soft peck on her cheek that instantly brought a blush to his cheek though he ignored it. After all… she thought… she would forever think of him as a friend.

Play Chicken Tendies - Clinton Kane

Could a person ever stop loving a person they loved… so damn much? Jordan could answer that question. Hard no. Jordan would always love Sadie Monroe… it was inevitable. Every time he saw her, his mind flashed towards their happiness. The way she laughed - every laugh being genuine and lighting up any room, the way she wore her heart on her sleeve, the way she was once his everything. Maybe in a way, she always would be that for him and Jordan would simply have to live with the regret that he messed it up. As his hands brushed against hers, Jordan’s eyes fluttered close - taking a deep breath as he opened them again. Love didn’t just vanish in a day… or a month… or a year… or multiple years. And that’s the thing - he did love Sadie. He never lied to her about that, he never lied to her about his promise that he would love her forevermore if she stayed with him after his mistake. He did, however, understand her choice… her need to leave him. And for a long time - that broke him. The memories of the tears, the way he wouldn’t leave his apartment for months, the way it broke him to hear her being with someone else also rushed back.

But now… years later… it seemed they were both in a better place. Yes those feelings remained and maybe, over the years, it had just become easier to ignore them. Or maybe to move past them. As she asked about the wine he shrugged, “It just… it was something I needed to do. I don’t… know how to explain it…” he let out, rubbing the back of his neck slightly with a shy smile. It was the truth - he bought the remaining wines but it was as if there was a need to do so. As if it only felt right if the wine was in his arms… or in Sadie’s. Perhaps the distraction of the movie was good… because in all honesty, he didn’t know what to say after that… he was simply lost in the way Sadie looked taking that first drink… the memories rushing to her features. Whether those were good memories… or tainted ones he didn’t know and perhaps he never would.

Play I don’t want to watch the world end with someone else - Clinton Kane

Watching the movie… he didn’t think it was going to be this hard. He hadn’t actually seen the movie since the premiere so many years ago. After their break up… it was too hard. He could still remember the day his kids had come over for the week and he found them in the theatre watching this very movie and he couldn’t… he couldn’t stay. Now he was here again - sitting next to her watching it. Watching a movie where the on screen romance reflected the real one that was happening at the time. The love that was seen on screen was completely real. The way they danced, the way their movements just… fell into each other. It looked natural on screen because it was natural for them. The hardest scenes to film were actually the ones where he was acting as if he didn’t care about what she wanted. The way her character needed his help and he simply gave her an incredulous look and basically said no. They had to refilm those scenes multiple times because the chemistry was too strong for a first meeting. And mayybeee Jordan kept messing up the kissing scene later on purpose so he could keep kissing his wife.

At a few particular moments, Jordan discreetly looked towards Sadie… god how he wished he could read her mind. Perhaps if his gaze stayed, he would have noticed her doing the same thing. But he didn’t. Because in his mind - he was sure she had moved on. If her public relationships were any indication, the simple fact was that Jordan had messed up one of the best things that had ever happened to him. He knew that… their kids knew that.

At his sentiment to the girl, he smiled as she said that it wasn’t far from reality. “Hey no lies. That girl on the screen is… amazing. Directing can do a lot - but that… that’s talent,” Jordan whispered as the others watched the movie. The dance scene between their characters in a random location started and an idea popped in Jordan’s mind. Standing up, Jordan put his hand out. “Trust me for a second?” Jordan asked, and after a few moments of confusion - Sadie took it and he walked her towards the front of the room where the dance had already started with the music. And immediately, Jordan begin recreating the dance - or at least, what he could remember which meant a few mistakes. He could see a few phones out from the castmates, and wouldn’t be surprised if someone was live streaming. He only stopped at the end when their characters were on-screen kissing, and instead - he looked in her eyes, taking a deep breath before looking towards their castmates and bowing jokingly. “Guess we still got it huh?” Jordan asked as he led Sadie back through the cheers of the cast. They watched the movie a little longer… the air between them… more strange? Maybe. In any case, he found her turning towards him thanking him for what he said and simply shook his head. “No I just… I said the truth Sadie. I honestly just wanted the world to know that no matter what happened - I respect you and am so proud of you because you are absolutely amazing. No matter what people say… I don’t want you to think otherwise Sadie… and also… thank you too.” he whispered. He found his phone buzzing in his pocket, and after a few seconds - looked at it to see a news story about them recreating the dance. Seemed as if someone did live stream it - though Jordan couldn’t be annoyed at it. He just hoped it wouldn’t give rise to more false hope for their fans… it was something Jordan had fallen under many times. False hope. But the thing was - Sadie would forever do better without him and she knew that. And if he was being honest, she was and he always knew that.
