Blue Royalty: New Blood

Not facing him, Annie listened to the unbothered tone through the words he was saying with an eyeroll and a growing urge for the conversation to end. After letting out a sigh and the minor comment to his response, she let the sound of her fingers tapping against the desk drown him out, and distracted from whatever was coming from behind her. Her eyes fixated on the teacher at the front of the class, who hadn’t once looked up from her computer since they had come in, and Annie detected how easy it would be to just leave. Why should she have any respect for the teachers anyway, since they all contributed to that f*cking file?

That’s when she finally turned around to Ricky, as he was telling her she wouldn’t do it. For moments after, their eyes were meeting, as if it were a great defeat for whoever broke and looked away first. And so, needless to say, Annie continued, looking at him. Who even was this person? And what the f*ck was he doing? “I-” She was about to give him an argument but was abruptly cut off by the teacher standing up, both their attentions’ switching to the convenient timing of the teacher leaving.

“So what, you’re like some kind of insurance or something?” Annie asked with raised eyebrows as he stood up with the intention of leaving. “I think your underestimation of my ability to pull this kind of sh*t off is painfully ironic considering you and-” Her eyes fell to his leg and then his crutches, “-that.” Then, during the final words to him, Annie turned back to the front, breaking away from the conversation. “I wish you good luck in even making it out of the door,” She finally said to him, though somehow that still didn’t stop him from talking to her: this time his response involving her parents, consequentially leaving her p^ssed at his continuous assumptions. What the f^ck he know? Her tapping on the table got increasingly faster as she tried to fight the urge to follow him. But she knew she had to, Annie couldn’t let him be right, that she didn’t have the guts, going back up the rabbit hole, what did he know about the rabbit hole? Nothing, no, exactly, he didn’t know anything, so she didn’t need to listen to him, it was fine, she didn’t care, he was wrong, she knew that, she didn’t need to prove it to him or to anyone.

“I would say wait up but you’re not getting anywhere on that leg anyway,” Annie called over to him in the hallway as Ricky was making a sad attempt to head for the exit. Catching up to him, Annie purposely brushed her leg against his broken one with somewhat force as she overtook him. “And don’t ever talk about my parents again,” She warned before then walking ahead of him, not at one point actually facing him, as if she were challenging him to try and overtake despite his leg.
