Blue Royalty: New Blood

Diego just needed things to make sense again. Diego used to feel like everything was the way it was supposed to be. He never imagined everything would turn out the way it had, and it seemed like the life he had always known was coming apart at the seams. He just needed to know if this was real. He couldn’t go on without being sure. It meant a lot to Diego to hear Raph say that no matter what the results were, he would always be his brother. That’s what Diego wanted most, his family to still be his family. As dysfunctional as the Montoya family could be, they were the family he had always known. His parents, his little sister Isabella, and his brothers, both Raph and Ricky. They were his family, and DNA would never change that, but why did it have to push everything into chaos? “Thanks, bro. Either way, I’m glad you’re my brother.” Was part of him still worried that Raph would change his mind if the results confirmed that they weren’t brothers? Yes, he knew he was overthinking it, but he couldn’t shake the idea that these results would change so much.

It was just a few moments later that someone walked up to them, papers in hand. They had the results. “What does it say? Is my brother actually my brother? Am I really part of my family?” he blurted out, unable to stop himself from asking the questions before she could pass them the paper with all of the information. “According to these results, yes, your brother is actually your brother. There was a direct match to Enrique Montoya.”

Jordan took a seat next to her, and Laurel truly did not understand what he was doing there. What was she to him? What, was she an obligation he gained because of marrying her mother? How did that work after he had been in a coma and then treated her mother like hell for weeks? Apparently he was worried about her. What did it matter to him? She was basically nothing to him, just like he was to her. They weren’t family. For most of her life the most he had been to her was the father of people she had gone to school with. As well as he was the person who always seemed to bring pain to her mother. Her mother’s first love or not, Laurel had seen her mother cry over him far more than she should have. “You were worried about me? Yeah, right, like I’d believe that.” she said rolling her eyes. ”I had a few drinks last night and then woke up here with a concussion and a hangover. How do you think I’m feeling? But really, why are you here? I’m not some charity case for you to deal with.”

Fortunately Artemis didn’t seem bothered by Bree’s interruption. Though, apparently Bree must have simply caught her on a good day based on her following statement. “Damn, guess our paths crossed on just the right day then.” Artemis then put her hand out for Bree, saying she liked her name as well. Bree lightly shook her hand with a light smile, as she thanked her for the complement on her name. “Thanks, and wow that’s cool.” Archery was cool, and there’s something even more cool about someone named Artemis actually having in interest in archery. Though, then Artemis went on to continue saying how not to startle her while she’s using the bow, and how someone nearly got hurt because of it. Bree’s someone who’s all for dark humor and risks, but that just seemed unsafe. Or maybe part of it was just her uncle and his worries about her staying safe rubbing off on her. “Note to self, stay far away from you with a bow. But still, nobody should really go and scare someone while they’re trying to shoot like that though, and not be somewhere that they could get caught in the line of fire.”

“Yeah, you caught me at a good time. I’m usually pretty calm when I’m away from my family. My cousin kinda…hates my guts. I still don’t know why.” She shrugged, shaking her head in annoyance at the thought. “Yeah, it definitely makes sense that I’d like archery based on my name. I quite like deer too, which are one of her sacred animals. They’re graceful.” Artemis nodded at Bree’s statement about not going near people with bows. “Yeah, if you don’t want to get shot, wait until we put the weapon down. Not like I’d purposely shoot anyone, though. Well, unless I had a very good reason to, but it’s highly doubtful I will.” She took a drink of her coffee, setting it down on the table. “Would you like anything to eat? I was just going to go get something.”

Was he shocked by her abruptness towards him? No - not in the slightest. Honestly, ever since Jezebel had introduced Laurel to the idea that he was there to stay, she had expressed her dislike towards the man. And honestly, Jordan respected her opinions. He knew this was hard for her, and he wanted to show over time that he was good for her mother. After all, he wasn’t her father and he wasn’t trying to replace that in Laurel’s life. He just… wanted a new spot in her life for him.

That being said, he knew he already messed up the part for showing he was right for Jezebel after the way he acted over the past weeks. That didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to be there for Laurel when she needed someone in her life… especially when her dad wasn’t around anymore and her mom… well… needed sleep. He was… honestly worried about the girl. Much of the way she acted reminded him of Mikel, and not in a good way. In a way that made him wonder if she would live to see another few years. And no, Jordan didn’t mean survive. He meant live. A lot of her reminded him of the way his dad used to drink until he couldn’t even remember he had a son and it scared him that she was going to miss out on growing up. “You don’t believe me? I care about you Laurel. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.” Jordan sighed, looking her in the eyes as she told him about her night. “Laurel… why? Don’t get me wrong, you are an adult and you can do what you want and your mother and I will always be here for you no matter what you get into. But I want you to do something that makes you happy. Not something that makes you forget. So why? What’s going on in your life that you ended up here?”

Niko nodded as Rin spoke about prom. They didn’t really know what to say in response to them because they didn’t want to feel like make Rin feel like they were rubbing the fact that, aside from the earthquake, they’d had a great time at prom with Hyun-Ae. When their friend left to put in their order, they pulled out their phone, checking in with their sister to let her know where they were and make sure that everything was okay with their daughter. Rin came back with their order and Niko bowed their head, thanking them as they put the food on their table. “Why don’t you have a seat?” They offered, gesturing to the seat across from them. “You and I can catch up.”

After setting the food down on the table, Rin set a cup and teapot in front of Niko, wiping their hands on their apron. “Sure, let me just go take my apron off. I might as well order for myself too. I’ll be back, than we can catch up.” Rin said, walking away. They returned five minutes later, sitting down across from Niko. Shortly after, a male wearing the same uniform as Rin walked over, setting tuna sashimi and eel rolls in front of them. “Arigato, Ayato.” They said with a bow as he walked away. “How are you doing today, Niko?”

If you had asked Logan what she expected to come of her and Alex before this, she wouldn’t have imagined this. They had seen each other in school, but they had never truly talked until one night at the bar. She poured him a drink and it all went from there. One night at the bar turned to friendship, even while Alex was gone, searching for his father. There was a short while when he brought her out with him, but she still had yet to find out the full story of what happened during the time he was gone.

Now, Logan found herself walking into a coffee shop after she got a message from Alex, who had finally come back to town. She gave a slight smile as she walked up to Alex. “Hey. I get it.” she said, understanding the situation before he pulled her into a booth to sit next to him. She knew he had a lot going on, and she was happy to be there for support. He said how it seemed pointless to have gone, especially with how the man had pretended to be Alex’s father. She could imagine what it was like, how much the secrets and lies hurt, and she hated that he was going through it. “A f^^king a^^hole, that’s who.” Logan knew he was upset, and she was upset about the whole situation for him too. She looked Alex in the eyes as he moved closer, asking for her to make him feel better. He didn’t have to say it. She closed the distance, a hand on his thigh, the other at the side of his head, bringing her lips to his. No strings, just taking his mind off of the situation, no questions asked.

Laurel didn’t have a reason to trust the man in front her. It didn’t matter that she had heard others depict him as the good guy, she had yet to see it. When Laurel found out that her mother was dating him, she tried to talk her out of it. Because why should her mother go crawling back to someone she dated in high school and was still hurt by? It was stupid, begging for further heartbreak, and she had seen enough of that. Laurel saw her mother date, saw how nothing worked out. Why would it work this time?

When she found out that her mother was pregnant, and that they were getting married, it only pushed Laurel further from her family. If things went like Laurel had expected, her mother would end up hurt and alone, and the kid would be in the same situation Laurel grew up in, or the kid would grow up split between parents. Even if things went the opposite from what Laurel was expecting, it wasn’t something she felt comfortable being around. If her mother didn’t end up hurt, if they somehow had a happy relationship that worked, the life Laurel grew up with would be gone. Her new sibling would grow up with the picture perfect family that she never got the chance to have, and her mother would get a do over, a whole new family that wasn’t just the two of them. Either way, Laurel lost. Watch her mother get hurt by a doomed relationship that she couldn’t prevent, or watch herself be replaced in her own family, neither seemed like something she wanted.

Her relationship with her mother went downhill, because Laurel couldn’t watch it. Then everything just got worse. There was Jordan’s accident and how he treated her mother after, and her father died. The man she had spent her entire life begging for more time with, that she even idolized, was gone. Her father was gone, and what part of her that was holding onto the things that mattered to her just seemed to stop caring. She had always been someone who got into trouble, lived a bit on the wild side, so what did it really matter if she embraced that side of her. Its not like most people would really care. “What makes you so sure that I’m not doing something that makes me happy? So what if I want to have some fun? And don’t try to act like you’re my f^^king father. You’re not him, my dad is f^^^ing gone.”

Her eyes followed Ricky as he walked across the room, ominously making adjustments that prevented being caught out by teachers. “They’ll still know it was you if you kill me,” Lenora told him, unsure of how much she would actually consider that to be a joke. “Sorry to be a bearer of bad news. Again,” She continued, still being the only one to acknowledge her revelation moments before. She stayed sat at the desk while he advanced to the teacher’s desk, somehow opening the lock. While she knew it couldn’t really be possible anymore, Lenora still kept checking the door, worrying about the moment it would be swung open by their teacher.

Lenora sat up at the reveal of the bottle that she was in detention for, perhaps a touch of embarrassment hitting her. “You can’t—” She started, though stopped herself as he opened it. Because who else was going to have it? Not her mother, she would hope… that was kind of the point. “That’s really clever, my mom didn’t have that same initiative,” Lenora told him after weighing out what sounded worse, his guess or the truth - knowing her vague answer will probably come with an accurate assumption from Ricky of what that means. “And it’s not bullsht,” She told him as he started drinking - Lenora was yet to have that same urge though she knew it probably wouldn’t be long. “I tried to tell you as soon as I could, I tried, the first day of junior year, I did, but you—” She fell back in her chair as Ricky cut her off.

“There is alllwaysss strawberry slander here, at least it’s not your favorite flavor. I don’t think we could be friends if it was,” she said jokingly while smiling at him. Oh it was always so nice hanging out with him. Knowing they could constantly joke around and neither would take it seriously, well that was the best kind of friendship to exist. ”Hey hey hey take that hand off your heart, I appreciate it, love it. The… this is appreciated,” laughing, she looked at the man. His gaze kept focusing off the road, looking at the girl and somewhat smiling. Unsafe, high man driving… Maybe not so great. ”Keep your eyes on the road Mr. High, I don’t want to die today.” Please get there soon.

”Oooh a little surprise, huh?” She usually loved being surprised, the excitement of not knowing what was to come always excited her. Plus, it’s not like it mattered. Hal would literally eat anything, well anything but octopus. Disgusting. Spontaneous dates were always the best, would be nice if someone cough cough Fin would ask her on a date, and actually… did it. F*ck boys man, always thinking they are superior.

“It’s…” she trailed off, debating on what she wanted to tell him about. Should she tell him about Fin? It most likely would cause him to become upset, seeing as she’s noticed that nobody really… Likes Fin per say. Zek followed it up with asking her about the friends she’s made. Well, she’s made a couple, but the most “important” one… Well that was a different story. They definitely were not friends, yet. Yet. ”It’s uh okay I guess. Haven’t really been doing much, writing, sneaking out, partying, drinking. You know, the usual.” She shrugged. There wasn’t usually much she did, school was meh, she really only focused on what her plans were, journalism. Doing what her mom did, writing about what she was writing about. Zek ended up placing his hand onto her knee, giving it a squeeze. That was just friendly, right? Right. There was always something between them that Hal recognized, but it was never anything more than just… casual.

She turned her attention back to the man when he began to speak again about not controlling who she had become friends with. ”I’ve noticed people suck don’t worry. It’s just… This school. Unfortunately I think I’ve already fallen in with a couple of the people you don’t like” she paused, hesitating, ”like um… Fin. Don’t kill me” she shot her hands up in the air. ”I promise it’s for a good reason, I pinky promise.” she stuck her pink finger out to the man. ”You gotta introduce me to some of your friends, I need some good ones though, seriously.” The girl smiled, she knew it would be good to have some people she actually trusted in this school other than just Zek and well, Mason. ”We should go out somewhere tonight, just drive, but maybe not in this bus… While you’re high… I don’t want to die” She teased, looking at him while he drove them to wherever they were going.

Athena hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Luna since prom. It scared them but maybe they were ready to try the whole ‘relationship’ thing again, with a large emphasis on ‘maybe’. Either way, they knew they needed to talk to her and so they asked her to meet them at this outdoor market that they used to go to with their grandmother whenever she visited them from China. Athena wasn’t the best at vulnerability but they hoped that showing Luna this important place from their childhood would show her that they were willing to let her in.

They waited at the entrance to the market, pacing as they waited to see if Luna would show up. There was no reason for her not to and yet, it was hard to turn off their doubt. A wave of relief washed over them as they spotted a familiar head of blonde hair. “Luna!” They called out to her after taking a deep breath in an attempt to calm their nerves, waving their hand in the air to make sure that she saw them. They walked in her direction, smiling as they got to her side. “You made it.”

The process of using one’s mind to consider or reason about something.

Luna was thinking, or well not quite. She was not considering or trying to reason something she was just lost? That was not quite the word more like confused and conflicted. Ever since prom, Luna’s life has been weird. She had avoided her step family, locking herself in her room- she didn’t even speak to her dad. All she could think about was them or was it really thinking? No not really, it seemed more like they had apartments inside her head rent free. They were there without consideration or reasoning. Luna has never felt like this, she doesn’t even know what’s she’s feeling rn or if she was feeling something. What did feeling meaning again? right an emotional state or reaction, yeah Luna was definitely feeling but what exactly? What possible could the feeling of feeling like someone is living inside your head rent free and you smile at that be>

Strange. Strange. Strange. That’s all Luna could label it. She got her phone out, wanting to search up “how to get someone of your head” but before she could do that she heard a buzz from her phone.

Athena. They had texted her. Fcking of course, just when Luna had been trying to erase them. Luna sighed and read the text. Luna blushed, they were asking her to meet them in this outdoor market. No, Luna shook her head- she will not blush, nope and she will not go. Athena probably doesn’t feel that way about her, remember how they reacted when she first kissed them? Yeah exactly! Athena doesn’t like her like that and she doesn’t like them like that… all this ignoring their drunk accident.

Luna had no plans to go, she was not planning on showing up not at all. Luna is 100% not going to show up.

She showed up. Luna wore a tight crop top with a jacket on top and some blue jeans. She had curled her hair, her hands were inside her pocket looking around for Athena- fck she wasn’t supposed to come, maybe there was still time to leave. She turned around ready to leave when she came face to face with Athena. They waved their hand at her direction as they called their name walking in her direction.

“You made it.” Hardly

Luna offered them a soft smile, “Of course I did, why wouldn’t I come.” The guilt of wanting to leave ate her alive but she couldn’t help it. Luna was what you would call a tongue biter, a second guesser. “You look really nice.”

Leah internally groaned as her mother practically dragged her through the crowd, her father walking ahead of them. There was a pastor speaking smack dab in the middle of a shopping mall, and Leah’s parents, being the religious zealots they were, dragged her along. She had to get out of there. Luckily, there were a lot of people, so she could probably slip away. Well, except for her mother’s death grip on her hand. Leah practically got her arm pulled out of the socket as her mother yanked her as close to the stage where the preacher was. She had her chance to slip away when the man lead everyone in a prayer and her mother let go of her hand. She practically sprinted through the crowd, eventually colliding with a pretty, dark skinned girl. “Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! Are you ok?” Standing up, she offered her hand to help her up.

Rin walked off and returned, followed by a worker a few minutes later who was delivering food for them. “Well, we launched a new scent collection at the store and so we had people coming in and out all morning.” They excitedly told them before taking a sip of their soup. “They actually gave me some samples to pass out and advertise the collection. I can give you one if you’d like.” They added, remembering the bag of samples in their purse. They poured themself a cup of tea before gesturing towards Rin with the pot, offering them a cup.

The girl introduced herself as Cleopatra, and Leah smiled. “May I call you Cleo? I’m Leah. Again, I’m very sorry for knocking you over.” She said, clasping her hands together. Spotting her mother looking through the crowd, she gulped. “Please hide me. That’s my mom, and…she’s crazy. I’m what you would call sheltered, and I definitely don’t want that. Both my parents are extremely religious, and…well, it’s way too much. Please help.” Leah awkwardly begged, attempting to make herself smaller so her mother wouldn’t see. I’m definitely coming in to get some later. May I ask what the scent is?” Niko then offered them the teapot, and they gladly took it, pouring themselves a cup of tea.

If there was something Jordan prided himself on, it was being able to read how those around him were feeling. Maybe it was a part of growing up in the role of being silent - meaning, he simply observed instead of speaking. After all, there was nothing else to do locked up in the tiny closet his dad would put him in when his buddies were over. So oftentimes, Jordan found himself looking through the small cracks - watching those his dad interacted with and guessing what they were going to say. It was a game… something that later became a prominent trait of his. Jordan knew how to read a room… knew what to say to make the situation better… usually.

There were two things he could sense in the current situation:

  1. Laurel Parker had a distaste for him - one he could sense from the very start when Jezebel introduced him to her. That being said, Jordan never wanted to push her. She was right - he wasn’t her dad and he knew it was better for her to come around on her own… when she was ready.
  2. Laurel Parker was headed down a path very similar to one other person Jordan had known years before - none other than her father herself, Mikel. And in the latter situation, Jordan had to distance himself from Mikel knowing that where the man was going was… nowhere good.

“You know Laurel, I knew someone exactly like you a long time ago…” Jordan sighed, not saying anything in response to her earlier sentiment. It wasn’t worth it - he knew that much. If he responded to it, she’d fight him… and that was the furthest thing from what he wanted right now. He was scared for her… and perhaps there was nothing he could say to convince her he cared, but he could at least talk to her. “That person tried so hard to prove to the world that they didn’t care about anything. That they were ready to burn it down, with everyone around them. They partied till the sun came back up in the morning, they drank until they forgot their own name, and they got into fights far more often than I could count on my hand.” Jordan revealed, looking her in the eyes as let his mind go back to the memory of Mikel.

“But if you ask me if that person was happy? Truly happy - I couldn’t say yes. Not back then. Because if you want to know the truth, I saw that person when he was happy… truly happy, or… what at least was a spark of what showed him that there was more to this world than just having fun. I saw how that person was when he was with your mom, Laurel. Look, I don’t think that Mikel and your mom meant to be together, but I do know that your mom and you changed him… because after you were born, he stopped pretending as if nothing mattered. He stopped acting like he didn’t want to live, and he did something that actually made him happy. I think he figured out his life because he knew it would make you proud.”

With those words he stopped talking, leaning in closer. “I know I’m not your dad, I’m not trying to be. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be a part of your life, Laurel. I want to make sure you’re okay. That being said, do you think if Mikel was here, you could tell him you were doing something that made you happy?”

Maybe a younger Enrique would have acted differently in this situation. Correction; a younger him would have argued with whatever professor put Lenora in detention in the first place for bringing alcohol to school. Young Enrique knew that wasn’t her - and he would have fought tooth and nail until everyone else believed him too. Anddddd if that didn’t work, he obviously would have gotten detention too just to be here for her.

However, this Enrique - one that was torn into a million pieces by an event catalyzed by the girl herself - barely trusted himself, let alone the one that made him who he was today. This Ricky loathed the girl sitting in front of him. This Ricky simply didn’t care whether the alcohol was hers or not - because they weren’t in each other’s lives anymore, and truthfully, he never wanted to be again. “If that’s what counts as a joke to you nowadays, I have to say your comedic timing’s gotten better. And I honestly thought you reached your peak when you were fcking someone while my back was turned,” Ricky said with spite to her comment, taking another long drink from the bottle.

Thankfully, the slight buzz was already kicking in and he could feel the warmth of the liquid settle around his body. Did he hear the comment about her mother? He did - and honestly, it probably made more sense than her bringing the alcohol herself. But him? Caring? That wasn’t who he was anymore. That wasn’t who he had been in a long time - so he didn’t even comment on it. He simply gave her a somber look that told her he knew exactly what she was talking about. Her other words, however, were simply laughable. A joke - as if his life wasn’t enough of a joke already.

“Alright let’s play a little game Lenora,” Ricky stated, his eyes darkening as he walked towards her desk - bottle in hand. Placing the bottle on her desk, Enrique got to his knees so that he was at eye level with the girl. Leaning his head against the desk, he looked into her eyes for a second… or perhaps it was longer. Who knows, he was tipsy and this was around when time became harder to keep track of. “Let’s say I hypothetically believe this bullsht, which, let me get one thing clear - I fcking don’t,” Ricky begin, before putting his hand on her cheek, before moving his thumb to her chin so that she couldn’t move her head away from his. “In some crazy world, you didn’t open your legs to Elio while you were with me - which we both know you did. Why the fck do you care if I know? I don’t give a sht about your life anymore, Len. And you didn’t fight for me - clearly because you were over me back then. You don’t care about my life, and you haven’t for a long time. I’m not that stupid little boy who is going to fall to his knees to be at your beck and call anymore. That idiot was… young, stupid, and head over heels for a girl who only cared for herself, and, Len, you taught that boy to never trust anyone ever fcking again. So tell me, what does me believing you today do? That Ricky is dead - and you’re the one who put a knife in his back. Et tu, brute?”

With that, Ricky scoffed - moving his hands from her chin and back to the bottle - waiting only a second before taking a long, long drink. "Lenora, I’m not worth saving. And neither are you - so either join me for a drink, or sht the fck up for the rest of this detention because I don’t want to hear a liar talking for the next hour.
