Starting school and after that, Reuben hasn’t had much going on long term wise. Not even a birthday celebration yet! The days have gone by the same. The sun rises, school starts, nothing happens, school ends, he goes home, or to a friends house, or to the mall, you know, all the endless possibilities you could have as a privileged beryl heights teenager.
After the end of the party, Reuben pulled his stupid, puffy halloween costume over his head, jumping into the pool in nothing but boxers, cold water catching him when he falls in, causing the fabric of his shorts to slosh a little bit. Only a few people remained here right now, as the moon fell from the top of the sky above them. All of their faces were dimly lit, lights from the pool empshasizing the outlines of their features. Damaged hair, teethy smiles, and round eyes filled with youth. Though, one particular outline of Reuben’s stood out to people when they looked under water. That’s right. His massive dong. Part of his immense confidence, really, he strided through the pool, heavy steps having nothing on him until he came eye to eye with a beautiful woman. She smelled of sweet perfume, and had the tan of someone who had done it all. Soft lips, and perfectly messy hair.
They noticed small crowd nearby left. Then, it was just the two of them alone, the girl smiling slightly. You know how that ends.
Halfway through the school day, Reuben found himself walking through the hallway that smelled of pencils and neck sweat with his girl friends that lessened the stench with their hair conditioner. It was beginning to become a routine. Although, at Cerulean High, nothing was truly ever normal. This morning there was a fight in the locker room, where his family friend Ricky broke his leg. Reuben wasn’t suprised in the least bit, the guy hasn’t been the same for years. When he and his dad come over, he isn’t home anymore, his room deserted. Every time they come over it’s the same. Unmade bed, water bottle fallen from the nightstand, empty, no cap on. He wondered where it was he took the women he took an interest in. Five star hotels, nah, most likely it was parking lots. He’s not the nice guy Reuben knew anymore.
Outta nowhere, Daiane came and stole the guy from his friends, giving an awkward smile as he waved goodbye before turning and listening to the woman in charge. The two of them walked a short distance before pulling into a quiet corner next to the clear, fire exit doors. “You summoned me, madame?” He playfully asked for a reason for his kidnapping. She wore a loose, white, graphic tee with big overalls over it, accompanied by a baseball cap held in her hands since she didn’t need it inside. “Ah, a self-proclaimed halfday.” He understood. They had attempted to celebrate their birthdays before, but it was so hard to get it to all make sense. With Reuben joining his dad on set, and Dai’s elaborate dress projects, scheduled business events and more, the days seemed to rinse off like soap.
“After you m’lady.” He gestured out as he opened the door for her. Reuben never said no to a good, spontaneous idea. And although he knew that Daiane could carry her own, he was raised a gentleman by his father. No matter what a woman may do by her own hands, you may never lose your class. It was especially important that Reuben senior taught him how to treat women, since the motherless boy was already so out of touch. Thankfully, it worked like a charm in most cases. With the help of his father, Reuben brought many women into his life that helped fill the hole his mother left when she died. Would it ever be as though he were brand new? Maybe. For now, all he could do was try.
“I’ll drive” He offered with a smile as she walked out. The two of them trotted through the parking lot under the noon time sun, big steps conquering the little car stoppers until they reached Reuben’s shiny, red vehicle. An impulse buy, of course, but damn was she a beaut. They hopped in and drove off onto the Beryl Heights roads. Vroooommmm Vroooommmmm.
Arriving in the cool, air conditioned, place that smelled like absolute feet, he sighed. “I didn’t bring my socks.” Perhaps Daiane had remembered hers, since she was the one with the idea. But the ones on Reuben’s feet were just plain, white nikes. “Hear me out, we get them for each other as extra birthday presents!!” He joked lightly with a smile.
