With the baby’s crying and Daniel’s complaining, Delilah tried to stay quiet by at least lessening one of the two. “Oh my God… please shut up,” She exclaimed, though purposely not making it completely clear who she was saying that to. “Yes, great,” Delilah replied, not entirely genuinely, when Dan had suggested to feed it - and she was more so jumping at the opportunity to stop him talking. “Can you get the bottle then?” She asked him with raised eyebrows, pointing to the area on the couch that he had left his bag, remembering that it was underneath that.
Giving the baby the bottle, Delilah started to get into more of a rhythm when cradling it. She looked up and watched Daniel’s facial expressions change after her answer, and she sighed, knowing where his next questions will go. After questioning whether the baby was hers, he then branched off into the idea it could be theirs. “What? No,” She replied immediately. “Daniel, I aborted anything that could have been yours months ago,” She added, though starting to trail off and look away at the mention of the abortion.
After a moment of what would have been silence if there hadn’t been the continuous sound of crying filling the room, Delilah finally looked back at him. “It’s not yours, Daniel,” She said, her eyes meeting his - perhaps with a hint of sincerity in her voice. “Don’t you think I would have told you something like that? Or, at least, Blue Royalty would have at some point. Either way, you would have known by now.” As she said her last words, the sound of the crying started to die down to which Delilah couldn’t hide her surprise.
Once the room reached complete silence, Delilah slowly walked over to the cot in the corner of the room, and tried to be gentle in lowering the baby into it as it fell asleep. As soon as it wasn’t in her hands, she took a few steps back, a small smile creeping out of a sigh of relief. “Thank you,” Delilah said quietly to Daniel after a while of silence, as a delayed response from him getting the bottle.
