Week after the opening ball, 1789, London, Northwick estate

“Your words are most kind and your presence is a delightful start to the day,” Mervinia replied with a warm smile. She couldn’t help but appreciate his genuine enthusiasm and the effort he had made to bring canvases with him, a thoughtful gesture that did not go unnoticed.

Her heart skipped a beat as she continued, “As for my parents, my father is occupied this morning, and my mother shall be chaperoning throughout the day. There’s no need for formalities right now, you shall have the whole day to get acquainted. Let’s head straight to the studio and make the most of our time.” she gave a faint smile at Darius, then briefly looked at her mother behind her in the hallway who gave her a small nod showing she supported the words her daughter had spoken.

With that, she gestured for him to follow her towards the studio, her excitement for the day ahead building once more. The promise of artistic exploration and the potential for a deeper connection left her looking forward to what the day might bring. As they entered the well-lit and well-organized studio at the Northwick estate, Mervinia felt a surge of inspiration. The sight of her neatly arranged canvases, brushes, and an array of vivid colors filled her with a sense of purpose.

With a graceful flourish, she selected a canvas, one he had brought, and positioned it on an easel, the pristine white surface waiting to be transformed. Her fingers delicately ran over the brushes, choosing the perfect one for her first strokes. A relatively big brush, perfect for the bold background she was thinking of creating. The scent of fresh paint and the gentle hum of creativity in the air enveloped her. She began to work, her movements purposeful and confident. Mervinia had a natural talent for painting, and it was evident in every stroke she made. Her hand seemed to dance across the canvas, giving life to her vision.

As Mervinia continued to paint, she paused for a moment, looking at Darius with a thoughtful expression. “Mr. Cuthberg,” she began, her voice filled with a sense of artistic purpose, “I’ve been pondering our endeavor to be at the forefront of the Romantic movement in painting. I believe that this artistic movement is about capturing the raw and powerful emotions that are often overlooked in traditional art.”

She continued, “In this painting, I aim to portray a scene that goes beyond mere aesthetics. I want to evoke the profound emotions, the sense of mystery, and the wonder of the natural world. A landscape that embodies the essence of of this new movement.” She said, as she made yet another smooth stroke, before she continued, “A lush yet hidden garden. In this garden, I see an overgrown and enchanting wilderness where nature reclaims what was once ordered by man. The untamed foliage, hidden paths, and wildflowers symbolize the freedom of nature, unrestrained by human hands. The beauty of the garden lies in its wildness and unpredictability.”

Mervinia’s gaze was filled with conviction as she explained further, “In other forms of art, such as literature and poetry, we see Romanticism celebrating the sublime, the untamed, and the emotional. This painting captures this sentiment. I believe the garden to be a place where emotions can run wild, where nature and human passion intertwine. In the Romantic view, such a garden would be a sanctuary of authentic feelings, a place where one can escape from the constraints of society and embrace the untamed spirit within.”

She looked at Darius, her eyes shining with the passion of her explanation. “It’s a representation of the Romantic fascination with the extraordinary and the mysterious in nature, a place where we can explore the depths of our emotions and our connection to the natural world. What do you think of my choice?” she asked followed by a nervous giggle. She then looked at him over her easel, curious about what he was painting. “And may I inquire what you are painting?”
