no dance at the moment
Adeline walked along the ballroom. Many eyes were still glancing at her, but all she could linger on was the wonderful dance she had just had with the prince. She knew it was too soon to tell if he was the one for her, but his beautiful words seemed so sincere. Adeline placed her hand on her cheek as she recalled his touch and smiled. She couldn’t help but wonder if he shared the same emotions. Her thoughts were soon interrupted as she heard her name in almost a cry, “Adie…”
Adeline did not hesitate; she went directly to her lifelong childhood friend, Orpheus. Adeline had met Orpheus during the time that Atlas had decided to become distant from her; she was only a young girl at the time, and she had never understood why the one person who had always protected her and made her feel as if she could conquer the world with him by her side had suddenly become distant. Orpheus soon came into her life like a ray of sunshine, filling the void that Atlas had left behind. From the moment they met, Adeline and Orpheus formed an unbreakable bond, sharing their dreams, fears, and secrets with each other. Orpheus became Adeline’s pillar of strength, always there to offer a listening ear and a comforting presence whenever she needed it. He understood her in a way that no one else did; their love was not of a romantic nature but of a deep and profound friendship. As she approached him now, she could see the sadness in his eyes, and she began to worry. “Ophie? What’s wrong?” She spoke softly to him as she tried to make him look at her. Adeline smelled the whiff of alcohol from him, and she sighed. “You have been drinking too much again.” She said trying not to show much of her disappointment.
She was never a huge fan of drinking; she hated the smell it left on someone. Adeline was aware of Orpheus’s drinking, but she had hoped that he would be able to control it tonight of all nights. “Come, we need to get you outside for a moment for you to get it together.” She said sternly as she helped him contain his composure. Adeline looked around her; of course, everyone was still looking in her direction, but now even more so as Orpheus and she stood in close proximity. She took a swallow as she reconsidered what she was about to do. She couldn’t just leave her close friend in this awful circumstance, but if anyone saw her leaving the ballroom with him, it would be bad for her image. Adeline bit her lip and huffed as she finally pulled Orpheus outside to the balcony. As they stepped outside, she released her small grip from Orpheus and noticed a small breeze; the night surrounded them now, and all that illuminated was the moon and stars above them. The serene atmosphere of the night provided a stark contrast to the chaos and noise inside the ballroom. Adeline stopped to look at the stars for a moment as she realized it was the first time today that she could take a deep breath and forget about the prying eyes inside. She turned to face her friend and was about to express her displeasure with his behavior tonight, but she heard voices on the balcony where they stood and turned to look to see who else was there. “Uh, my apologies.” Adeline politely cleared her throat, trying to let the other couple know they were not alone anymore.
