Albina listened attentively to Finch’s response, her curiosity piqued by his mention of his mother’s expectations for his future wife. She nodded in understanding as he explained the importance of his mother’s opinion. “Ah, the ever-watchful eye of a discerning mother,” Albina spoke with a knowing smile. “She is a formidable judge of character when it comes to matters of the heart, no doubt.” that last part came out sounding slightly more sarcastic than she had wanted. Albina had liked Finch’s mama, Edith Ridlington, but also very much felt she would not have been accepted by her if Finch and Albina would have enjoyed each others company as more than a friendship. She was not too bothered however, as it would never get that far. It was more general frustration, knowing that many mama’s of the ton would have a difficult time accepting her as the wife for their son. Many mama’s did not wish for such an independent, intelligent, adventurous and outspoken lady as Albina was.
As Finch offered his assistance and playfully admitted his need for guidance in understanding what ladies desire, Albina couldn’t help but smile. His charm and candidness were refreshing, and she appreciated his willingness to engage in lighthearted banter. “Thank you for your offer, Finch,” Albina replied with a genuine smile. “Well, here’s a little secret,” she replied with a playful glint in her eye. “I believe it begins with genuine kindness and a keen ear to listen. Listening and paying attention to what a lady says will most certainly make her feel special. It’s the small details that often matter most.” she chuckled a little bit as she said: “And I do believe an earnest compliment, one for each her appearance and her character, holds great worth in the eyes of any lady.”
Finch’s genuine concern for her well-being touched Albina, and she found herself genuinely grateful for his offer of assistance to make her night better. “You are too kind, Finch,” she replied sincerely. “Your company alone has already brightened my evening considerably. Your willingness to ensure my night isn’t a complete disaster is truly appreciated.” Albina’s mood had indeed improved since their dance had begun, and she couldn’t help but feel more at ease in Finch’s presence. The playful banter and genuine friendship they shared made the ballroom’s stifling atmosphere more bearable. “Yet, there is a matter I would like to discuss with you. It has not escaped notice that Lord Orpheus Langston made a rather hasty exit following the dance I shared with him. Do you reckon such a departure might adversely affect my prospects of securing a suitable match this season?” this had weighted on Albina’s shoulders since it had happened and her mother had confronted her with her actions. She was afraid she had ruined her chances, by her too familiar behaviour that caused him to walk away from her.
