After bidding with Genevieve

-ˋˏ ༻❁༺ ˎˊ-

For the entirety of their childhood, Theodore and his sister had come as a packaged deal. They were always Kitty and Teddy, rarely one without the other. Then they drifted apart when their father started really preparing Teddy for the role he would eventually assume and their mother began focusing her efforts on preparing Kitty to find a husband. During his latest and longest stint in China, they stayed in touch through letters, of course, but pen and paper were not a replacement from experiencing life together and being able to immediately seek the other out in times of need. Even after long times apart, they always knew that they would be able to find their way back to each other.

Today’s events included horse races as well as the Queen’s Court Auction. Theodore had to admit that he did feel uncomfortable with the idea of men bidding on women’s company, especially when one of those women was his sister and another his cousin, but his mother had insisted that he participate. He enlisted Jasper as he browsed the baskets the ladies of the ton had prepared, getting his input on which baskets he should bid on. The baskets were unlabelled - it was not made clear to the men who the baskets they were bidding on belonged to. This made Teddy excited but anxious to see whose basket he had won.

“Joyful cheers for Theodore Radcliffe who has won our 6th basket. You, sir, have bid on Genevieve Hill’s basket. Congratulations. May your picnic be a haven of bliss and shared smiles.”

Teddy couldn’t help but feel relieved that he had bid on Genevieve’s basket. He would have to remember to thank Jasper later. While it meant that he wouldn’t be getting to know a potential partner, it did mean that he was spending his time today with someone he was already comfortable with and who he had wanted to get to know better. He also made sure to take note of who had won Kitty’s basket. It was someone he couldn’t recall having heard anything negative about, which he decided he would count as something good. Genevieve approached him with a smile, excitedly talking about how delightful it was that he had won her basket.

“No, I did not know it was your basket.” He answered her, shaking his head, when she inquired about his winning her basket. She didn’t sound disappointed, which made him feel at ease even though he did not know what to expect out of this afternoon. “It was Jasper’s counselling that led me to choose it, actually.” He explained, giving the credit where it was due.
