Lydia was pleased to see Augustus could play along with her snowball fight challenge. He had a good sense of humour, she had to hand it to him. Though she could tell he wasn’t as accustomed to the circumstances as Lydia was. She could see that he put in a lot more thought, and was far more conscious, about what he was going to say next. That’s where Lydia differed, her mother had been throwing suitors in her direction long enough that she developed an ease in navigating these conversations. It could also be put down to the fact that Lydia didn’t care for the development between herself and the suitors to give carefully worded responses.
“I suppose the cold has it’s versatilities,” Lydia told him with a polite smile after Augustus moved on from the outside snowball fights to indoor fireplaces and blankets during the winter. Breaking away from such seasonal conversation, Lydia dissected from Augustus that he was not skilled in hiding his reactions - as he had to turn away in order to physically conceal himself after one of her comments. She hadn’t meant for such response, and Lydia found another humorous smile cross her face.
Genuine curiosity waved over Lydia as the topic of writing was explored. It was not often she was able to integrate her interests into the conversation, as such interest was usually something frowned upon for a women. “There is no need to be bashful, My Lord,” She told him after his admirable modesty. “An ability to capture introspections into verse is not to be underestimated. In what manner do you compose these verses?”
As the pair eventually made their way to the dance floor, Lydia was able to look around at her fellow debutants, as well as her sister. She felt an overwhelming urge to break away from her partnering and speak with Aurelia more, to at least begin to make up for their lost year. But she had to stop herself. Lydia had made enough scenes today, she shouldn’t dare make another one by leaving her dance partner alone. This was important social event, and her mother’s stern gaze from across the room was a constant reminder of her expectations.
“So, do you find yourself particularly drawn to anyone this evening?” Lydia asked, trying to begin a new conversation as Augustus and her began dancing. “Perhaps the diamond has caught your attention?”
