It’s quite interesting, to think Christianity was by far the main religion in London in 1811, so the upper class was almost exclusively Christian too, but there were still these absolutely extravagant social seasons and all this luxury. That is so against Christian values :upside_down_face:

I think this way of thinking comes from Ancient Greece, and I believe they loved Ancient Greece and The Roman Empire.

The last sentence would apply to rich people in 1811 as well, and I think the extravagancy was to show exactly how elite you were. I think something like this persists today as well, with social media and name brands, except now rich people aren’t so blatantly obvious with their opinions about the working class.
