tbh that was the time before Pride and Prejudice came out (because it’s 1811 when Jane Austen’s first book Sense and Sensibility first came out) and even then people were unhappy by Elizabeth’s choice not to marry her cousin because they thought it was a good match for her so it persisted for a loooong time.
Tbh even in Downton Abbey two cousins do get married, because tehnically Matthew and Mary are cousins
