Coming Up With Secrets for Your Characters

Secrets are a common trait of many RPs. For some, secrets are an optional bonus for the character, but in others, secrets are the foundation of the RP. For those, you have to decide on secrets as you make the character, and you’re encouraged to make more. Many of us struggle with secrets, but some RPers do really well at creating them.

So, how do you come up with secrets for your characters?

I try turning to their character. What would make sense for a character to keep a secret. For instance a person who is usually scandalous and doesn’t really care about reputation, the secret cannot be something along the lines of “They can’t know it could ruin my reputation”, and for a nice person, or an innocent person it would be very unlikely to be something along the lines of “Stole, killed, spend the night in jail” type of thing because that would eat their heart out.

But I usually go to a few of these to be the topic of my characters secret

  • College/education
  • Murder/witnessing murder
  • Financial trouble/Being rich
  • Cheating/Sleeping with somebody unlikely
  • Drug use/abuse
  • Other people’s secrets that you’re afraid are not yours to tell
  • Secrets that would ruin the reputation of you or your beloved ones if it came out (Like in It Lives in the Woods from Choices, a character had to keep a video away from public because it would ruin her mother’s chances at her job)
  • Things you’ve seen that you’ve been threatened to keep silent

I sometimes try to have my character have one, and when a subject comes up that involves the secret I will just change the topic, but most people don’t catch on and I’m just like…I’ve avoided the topic like 20 times this week, when will you catch on?
but when you give a slight hint, people will often catch on right away and I don’t like that either.

I make an idea of what they are like and what their backstory is and try to make sense of what secret I can possibly make out of and for them.

most of the time, i try and tie in my characters secrets with another character that seems like they could relate to it.

Yes, how?! I’m stumped.

I still struggle sooooo much with character secrets. I let tv shows and movies inspire me where possible, which has helped with at least a couple character secrets off the top of my head. Something that I find useful is to write out the secret and the story behind it in as much detail as possible. The more of a backstory there is to the secret, particularly deeper big secrets, the more it can even be an inspiration. It may serve as something you can use in regards to future plots and plans, and it may lead to other ideas of secrets. Some secrets that connect to it. Because of something that happened with a character, something which is a secret, it could have led to something different having to happen, which also has to be kept secret. Secrets can cause more secrets.
When you have more than one character of your own, don’t be afraid to plan between them, as you may be able to plan secrets of some kind there as well.

I like to be wild with them. It’s like brainstorming and it’s effectivee
