Diversity comes in all forms even with RPing characters. Diversity in personality, identity, sexuality, religion, race, nationality, and in even more ways that don’t come to mind right away.
Why Create Diverse Characters?
The world we live in is filled with so many different types of people. We’re all unique in so many ways, why not bring a character unlike the majority of others in? It makes things more realistic with seeing different types of characters each with different backgrounds.
Creating more diverse characters make things more interesting by opening new opportunities in RPs, and helps us grow and see what it’s like to step into someone else’s shoes for a while.
How to Create Diverse Characters
As I said before, there are so many levels of diversity, but for all of them it’s the same. Research. This particularly comes in to play with characters with making sure to accurately represent and understand the character’s culture. The culture a character is part of can drastically impact who they become later on.
We all want to see different types of characters, but none of us want to be disrespectful and hurt someone with our characters. Sometimes that can happen, no matter what type of diversity you are dealing with. The key is to research when you are dealing with something you don’t personally know, and to listen to feedback from your fellow RPers. We all want to do right by our characters and grow in writing.
