Discuss: Your Favourite Tropes

Okay before I start let me say that I use British English, don’t come at me for the “ou”.:eyes:

I’m pretty sure there isn’t a thread on this but if there is let me know.

Drop (and discuss) your favourite tropes in fiction! Maybe tell us why you like it and give an example of a show/character you think executed it well. This isn’t limited to writing but feel free tell us how you plan to use it in your writing.

Examples: Enemies-to-friends, Villain becomes good and so on.

If it’s done correctly. Some villians don’t always need to be redeemed or deserve to.

Agreed. I’m not a fan of using this trope because it’s easy to mess it up and sometimes it is very unrealistic.

Although, when it’s done properly it can be a good example about how people change. I haven’t seen many good examples though…

also thank you @/Stargazer54 I wasn’t sure which was the appropriate category tbh

I have in some kids TV shows but others still mess it up so badly. Especially in Episode stories.

Ohhh yes, there was this really controversial story (I honestly can’t remember the title) where the MC forgave the man who raped her. It’s not always the fantasy villains… It stirred up a lot of controversy and I won’t go into too much detail but I’d say it’s the perfect example of what not to do.

The only cartoon character I remember getting a redemption arc is Zuko from ATLA  I’m sure there have been others but as part of the main cast, I don’t remember.

I like those honestly the way it goes makes me happy

Also I like friends to lovers as well idk maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for romance but if it’s done right I enjoy it.

Forgive her rapist? Are these authors on something?

I honestly like it when it’s “rivals” or they’re sort of competitive and then they don’t trust each other but as the story progresses they become better friends?
I feel like there’s a good example of this but I can’t remember…

slow burns all the way!
@Cam SolChris anyone? (I mean this is just a small part of their relationship but still.)

See, the problem is, you can’t make your Villian automatically be forgiven is they’ve suffered–

  1. No consequences whatsoever
  2. Still has bad antics
  3. Got off very easily or measily reprimanded

I didn’t even get to that chapter but seeing
her get off that easily WAS SO UNFAIR SHE NEVER GOT PUNISHED FROM WHAT THE COMMENTS SAID???

Oh my chocolate yes! It reminds me of this one movie I saw and like they really weren’t close to being friends but then they did finally get so close at the end I love stuff like that.

Or still has no remorse I hate seeing that honestly.

Me TOO, and they like work their differences out, both apologise for being awful to each other etc.
They overcome their differences… Oh this works SO well when the stakes are high.

YES! Like the protagonist just chooses to let them go and I’m like ???

She’s still popular, everyone still “likes” her (even the Mc and her friends), still is somewhat b!tchy to people, like Toriah–How awful at writing do you have to be? And Clementine might be a love interest. Greaaaatt…

One of mine is best friends becoming lovers. Idk why, I just like it sometimes. Only if they have a real connection.

And what I especially hate is when you force us to forgive a villain JUST BECAUSE THEY WENT THROUGH SOMETHING TRAMATIC! THAT’S SO IRRITATING AND AN AWFUL AND SHOEHORNED WAY TO MAKE US FORGIVE THEM–

What the heck?? Did no one tell her what she did wrong or anything? HOW IS SHE SUDDENLY A LOVE INTEREST SHE DID MC SO DIRTY!
Speaking of love interests, Summer was so pure ;-;
