Discussion: Bernie Sanders

Now I’m not going to lie I don’t really know much about this guy except the fact he generates a lot of controversial discussions. So let’s discuss this guy and explain who he is to me a long the way.

Free college tuition, health care (I think, I’m trying to remember), LGBTQ+ rights for all…

One of my teachers is leaning more towards him and Elizabeth Warren’s side, since one of their goals is to relieve people of their student loans

I personally supported him over Clinton in the primaries last time, but am not as passionate about him now, but not for any particular reason. It’s just a crowded field for democrats.

I love that he’s not a real insider in the Democratic Party. I personally have just registered as a democrat (after being No Party Affiliation for 12 years) because I truly despise the two party system. I think the Democratic Party is just another flavor of rich, out of touch white people and not substantially different from the Republican Party (traditionally not the Republicans of today that are cow-towing to Trump, Trump’s warping of the Republican Party is a whole different, insidious animal in my view).

I like his plan for free college tuition and Medicare for all. It’s ridiculous to go into debt due to medical expenses. I am very personally connected to the healthcare issue because, no exaggeration, Obamacare saved my mother’s life. She didn’t have insurance for years and years until Obamacare came into effect and she had to get insurance (and could afford it until the republicans like stupid Marco Rubio neutered it later) and but a few months later, she got cancer. She had the best surgeon and anesthesiologist, and after a long operation, she was cancer-free and has been for almost 5 years. She would not have gone to the doctor if she hadn’t had insurance to catch the cancer early. She would have been unable to afford the best surgeon without the Affordable Care Act.

Anyway, Bernie is not just talk. There are photographs of him being arrested at Civil Rights Marches in the 1960s (unlike Biden who claimed to be there but was not).

I also personally think the best person for the job is usually reluctant to take it, as in they aren’t ambitious for the sake of ambition, which fits Bernie well. He has clear goals and those are to improve the lives of many Americans who live in fear of medical debt and student loan debt.

The income inequality in the US is staggering, while many corporations pay $0 in taxes and he wants to fix that disparity.

Also, strategically, I think he may convince some Trump supporters from the previous election to switch sides (I know at least one personally) as Trump’s approval is very low despite the high stock market.

I think that his plan to give free education and free people from student loans is bad in its core, and people don’t really care to understand why because they want the government to take care of them.

I think he’s more like, struggling to be free, physically and it’s more of a grimace personally

So, one of the arguments I can think of against free higher education is that paying for something gives it more value.

I do think that can be true, but in the case of higher education, I don’t think making something prohibitively expensive makes it more valuable. No matter what, going to college/university will cost something. There’s books, housing, food, transportation to think of. But that’s life. However, life is not paying a median of $10,000 (for in-state tuition, meaning you go to one of the public unis from your state, the “cheaper” option) to $26,000 (for students wanting to go to a public uni in another state) per year, for 4 years, and starting your working life with that $40,000 to $100,000 debt hanging over your head.

Studies show time and time again that debt causes people to make stupid decisions (PNAS, Science Direct) and we just don’t need masses of people making even dumber decisions because they under the weight of crushing debt.
